📜 August 7: On This Day in History | | Badge of valor | Image: KATC | Each of the following events happened on August 7. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) General George Washington, commander in chief of the Continental Army, creates the “Badge for Military Merit,” a decoration featuring a purple, heart-shaped piece of silk. It would come to be widely known as the Purple Heart, awarded to all US Armed Forces members who are wounded or killed in action.
- B) San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds hits his 756th career home run, breaking the all-time MLB record set by Hank Aaron.
- C) President Jimmy Carter declares a federal health emergency in Love Canal, a neighborhood in Niagara Falls, New York, following the leakage of toxic chemicals buried under the community. It marks the worst environmental disaster involving chemical wastes in US history.
- D) French street performer Phillipe Petit steps off the roof of the south tower of the World Trade Center, in the most famous high-wire walk in history. Petit calmly traverses the space between the Twin Towers at a height of ~1,350 feet, before being arrested by local authorities (the charges were later dropped).
Hint: Only 4 players have hit 700+ home runs in MLB history |
