📜 August 19: On This Day in History | | August in Rome | Image: Brittanica | Each of the following events happened on August 19. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) 19-year-old Gaius Julius Caesar Octavian, who later assumes the designation Augustus Caesar, ascends to the rank of consul as one of two Roman heads of state. It comes a year after Octavian was adopted by Rome’s dictator Julius Caesar in secret.
- B) The Iranian military, with the support and financial assistance of the US government, overthrows the government of Premier Mohammad Mosaddeq and reinstates the Shah of Iran. Iran remains a solid Cold War ally of the US until a revolution ends the Shah’s rule decades later.
- C) Russia launches Sputnik 5, the first spacecraft to carry animals into space and bring them back alive. Passengers include two dogs, a gray rabbit, 40 mice, two rats and 15 flasks of fruit flies.
- D) Some 90% of German voters elect Adolf Hitler as president, an office he quickly abolishes in favor of the title "Führer and Reich Chancellor." It culminates Hitler’s unprecedented rise to a position of supreme and unlimited power in the German republic’s short history.
Hint: Octavian would later become Rome’s 1st emperor |
