📜 August 25: On This Day in History

Lunar lunacy

Each of the following events happened on August 25. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) The Great Moon Hoax takes life. New York’s The Sun begins running a series of news accounts that falsely claim British astronomer John Herschel has observed all sorts of life on the Moon, including blue unicorns, bipedal beavers, and winged humans. The stories become a global sensation before being exposed as fiction, though The Sun never retracts them.
  • B) Paris is liberated by French and US troops after 4+ years of Nazi occupation. General Dietrich von Choltitz, commander of the German garrison, defies an order by Adolf Hitler to blow up Paris’ landmarks and burn the city to the ground before its liberation.
  • C) Chicken ramen is first developed by inventor and businessman Momofuku Ando to help address a food shortage crisis in Japan, marking the first-ever instant noodles.
  • D) The Wizard of Oz opens in US theaters starring Judy Garland as the young Kansas farm girl Dorothy, who dreams about a fantastical land after being knocked unconscious in a tornado. It goes on to become one of the best-loved movies in history.

Hint: In the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy finds 2 magic ruby slippers
