Answers at the bottom! - A) One of the most powerful volcanic eruptions in recorded history occurs on Krakatoa, a small, uninhabited volcanic island near Indonesia. The explosions were heard some 3,000 miles away—believed to be the loudest sound in human history—and also threw five cubic miles of earth 50 miles into the air, created 120-foot tsunamis and killed 36,000 people.
- B) Barack Obama becomes the first African American to be nominated for the presidency by either major party. He would later defeat Republican John McCain to win the office.
- C) The first-ever jet flight is taken by the He 178, a turbojet-powered aircraft created by German Ernst Heinrich Heinkel. However, the jet fails to impress German government leadership due to its limitations surrounding speed and endurance.
- D) The shortest war in recorded history, the Anglo-Zanzibar War, started… and ended. The war began when Prince Khālid ibn Barghash seized the sultanate of Zanzibar and Britain ordered him to step down, which the prince refused. At 9:00 am British warships opened fire on his palace; 40 minutes later, Khālid had fled and his forces were defeated.
