The American gambit

Image: AP

Each of the following events happened on September 1. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) US chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer defeats Russian Boris Spassky in Reykjavik, Iceland, becoming the first American to win the World Chess Championship. Billed as the “Match of the Century,” it marks the world’s most publicized chess title match.
  • B) P.T. Barnum brings Jenny Lind, the world’s greatest opera performer, from Europe to the US for a major national tour, which set box-office records and fueled a widespread opera craze in America.
  • C) Airbags become mandatory in the US, after the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act goes into effect. The law requires all cars and light trucks sold in the US to have airbags on both sides of the front seat.
  • D) Pitcher Masanori Murakami becomes the first Japanese man to play in Major League Baseball. Murakami pitches a scoreless 8th inning for the San Francisco Giants in front of 39,000+ fans at the NY Mets' Shea Stadium.

Hint: Airbags are the last safety net in a car crash

Don’t let your teeth get all the attention

We obsess over our teeth, but the gums holding them deserve attention too. September’s Gum Wellness Month puts your toothpaste in the spotlight. Davids Cinnamon Hydroxi™ is a fluoride-free, mineral-based toothpaste designed for daily oral wellness.

Its star ingredient, nano hydroxyapatite, helps remineralize enamel and reduce sensitivity while you brush, while baking soda helps neutralize acids and freshen breath. And the warm cinnamon flavor is a welcome change from the usual mint, making twice-a-day brushing a little more enjoyable.
