📜 September 3: On This Day in History | | Star-spangled freedom fighters | Image: hdqwalls | Each of the following events happened on September 3. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) The American flag is said to have flown in battle for the first time, in a skirmish at Cooch’s Bridge, Delaware. American General William Maxwell orders the stars and stripes banner raised as his detachment meets an advance guard of British troops.
- B) Penicillin is discovered by Sir Alexander Fleming…by accident. Having left a plate of Staphylococcus bacteria uncovered, Fleming noticed that a mold (penicilin) which fell on the culture had killed much of the bacteria. Penicillin has since saved an estimated 200 million–500 million lives worldwide.
- C) English navigator Henry Hudson sails into the harbor of present-day New York City and up the river that now bears his name. His journey along the Hudson River is part of his quest for a passage to India on behalf of the Dutch East India Company.
- D) The Treaty of Paris is signed by representatives of the United States, Great Britain, Spain and France, officially bringing the American Revolution to an end. The signing officially signifies America’s status as a free nation.
Hint: Hudson was the first European to sail up the river that bears his name. |
