🤗 The Sweet Spotlight

The twin treatment

Image: HCA Virginia

Growing up in Richmond, VA, identical twins Travis and Travan were fiercely competitive. Basketball games, classroom grades, and even a stray quarter on the ground could spark a showdown.

Eventually, the twins realized they were better together. Travan explained the epiphany they had one day: “Instead of fighting each other, we were like, ‘Man, if we combine, we’ll be dominant.’”

From there on out, the brothers decided to be a team—a decision that would follow them all the way into medicine.

The journey begins

When Travis and Travan were around 12, their uncle was hospitalized. The brothers recalled a doctor speaking condescendingly to their family about his condition, prompting them to tell each other: “We could do better than that.”

  • They decided to become doctors, and did much of it side-by-side.
  • The brothers were co-valedictorians in high school, attended Stanford and the University of Chicago’s medical school together, and completed the same emergency-medicine residency program.

The brothers had each other’s backs every step of the way. They studied together, traded tips, and pushed each other through the challenges of becoming doctors.

As their careers progressed, that built-in support system remained: each had someone experiencing many of the same pressures who could offer advice and understand exactly where the other was coming from.

About a decade ago, Travis was offered a job as an emergency-department medical director at a Georgia hospital. He agreed on the condition Travan got the job, too. The brothers became co-directors.

Now, their journey has come full circle. In April, the 56-year-olds returned to Richmond as co-medical directors of Chippenham Hospital’s emergency department, becoming the first duo to hold the position there.

  • Travis and Travan still swap patient experiences to learn from each other and take daily walks to talk about work and family.
  • Travis has a fitting description for the brother who’s been alongside him through it all: his “superpower.”

“No matter how challenging the days are,” Travis said, “you can’t quit, because you got somebody else that…would never quit on you.”

Going quackers for sustainable farming

Image: Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate

🦆 Every morning, ~1,000 Indian Runner ducks are let loose at South Africa’s Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate, where they spend the day eating aphids, worms, and snails as a natural alternative to pesticides.

The feathered workforce also pulls double duty by helping break down livestock manure and enriching irrigation water with their droppings.

While the farm started the practice ~40 years ago, it’s now starting to catching on, with surrounding farms starting to purchase ducks and embrace regenerative farming.

🍩 DONUT Holes

🐶 The power of community… After a difficult divorce and move, Lisa Wilson was devastated when she had to return her dog of 11 years to the shelter. But she never stopped visiting every week to take her pup for walks and spend time together. When the shelter owner learned why Wilson had given up her dog, they helped the community step in to reunite the pair for good.

🖌️ A once-in-a-lifetime find…A Wisconsin landlord discovered an intriguing painting left behind in one of his past tenant’s units. After taking it to an art inspector for a closer look, he realized it was an original—albeit stolen—painting by Pablo Picasso.

🐾 Just because its cute… Spotted in London’s Waterloo station: the real-life Paw Patrol.

Let’s celebrate you

Welcome to What’s Your Win?, the section of the newsletter where we celebrate some good news happening right here in the Positive DONUT community.

🎉 One anonymous subscriber is killing it at work:

  • “I’ve been at my new job for a little over a year and I love my team and my supervisor is super supportive but last month, I didn’t do well or hit my sales goals. I thought I was going to have to quit before I lost my job but this month I came back with flying colors and beat my own PR for revenue generated, my conversion was higher than my entire team and I earned a big $17k commission check. It gave me the momentum I needed to continue to kill it the last 4 months of this year!!”
