📜 September 9: On This Day in History

Bug in the system

Image: Business Insider

Each of the following events happened on September 9. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) The first computer bug is found when the Harvard Mark II, one of the earliest computers, encounters a literal insect: a moth stuck in a small mechanical switch. The insect was taped to a logbook, which is preserved at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.
  • B) The Continental Congress formally changes the country’s name to the “United States” of America, officially replacing the term “United Colonies.”
  • C) Queen Elizabeth II becomes Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, surpassing the mark set by Queen Victoria. By the time of her death seven years later, Elizabeth had ruled for 70 years and 214 days.
  • D) Elvis Presley appears on The Ed Sullivan Show for the first time. It becomes the most-watched TV broadcast of the decade, with ~60 million Americans—or 82.6% of all TV viewers at the time—tuning in.

Hint: Elvis made 3 total appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show
