📜 September 22: On This Day in History

Fight for the farmers

Image: Billboard

Each of the following events happened on September 22. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) The first Farm Aid concert is held in Champaign, IL. The now-annual event was born from a comment from Bob Dylan after the famed Live Aid concert, when he said he hoped some of the money would go to US farmers. Less than a month later, Willie Nelson, Neil Young, and John Mellencamp announced plans for Farm Aid.
  • B) Friends, the famed TV sitcom about six young adults living in New York City, debuts on NBC. The show initially featured a group of relatively unknown actors, but went on to become a mega-hit across 10 seasons.
  • C) President Abraham Lincoln issues a preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, which sets a date for the freedom of 3+ million enslaved black Americans, and recasts the Civil War from being about restoring the Union to a fight against slavery.
  • D) National Geographic publishes its first issue, which comes without any photos. The magazine initially has so few subscribers that editor Gilbert H. Grosvenor addresses each copy personally, and ends up carrying the whole pile of them to the post office.

Hint: Farm Aid had 3 main organizers: Nelson, Young, and Mellencamp.
