📜 September 25: On This Day in History

Courage in the classroom

Image: Teen Vogue

Each of the following events happened on September 25. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) The Little Rock Nine begin their first full day of classes after the US Supreme Court ruled unanimously in Brown v. Board of Education that racial segregation in educational facilities was unconstitutional. It comes three weeks after Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus surrounded the school with National Guard troops to prevent its court-ordered racial integration, with President Eisenhower sending 1,000 paratroopers to enforce the order.
  • B) Tommy John surgery, now a commonplace procedure across the MLB, is first performed. Surgeon Frank Jobe repaired LA Dodgers pitcher Tommy John’s ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow, enabling him to keep pitching for 10+ years.
  • C) Congress approves the Bill of Rights, or 12 amendments to the Constitution designed to protect the core basic rights of US citizens.
  • D) Satchel Paige, 59, takes the mound for the Kansas City Athletics, officially becoming the oldest player in MLB history.

Hint: Paige pitched 3 scoreless innings
