More than 75 million Americans were under some form of excessive heat warning or advisory over the weekend, as a record-setting heat wave swept across the Southwest.

☀️🥵 More deets… In total, 27 communities either tied or broke temperature records on Saturday, according to Weather Service data.

  • Temps at DONUT HQ in Austin, TX, hit a record of 103°, two degrees above the previous June 11 high.
  • Denver, where it snowed less than a month ago, reached 100°, tying a record set in 2013 for both the high temperature and the earliest calendar day to hit 100.
  • In Phoenix, the National Weather Service reported a temperature of 114°, tying the record high for the date set back in 1918. Vegas reported temps of 109°, tying its daily record set in 1956.

🥁 And last, but not least: Death Valley, California, also tied its record high for June 11, reaching temps of 122 degrees Fahrenheit.

👀 Looking ahead… According to reports, temps will slowly moderate in the Southwest over the coming days as the heat dome makes its way toward the Midwest and Southeast (sorry, Chicago and Atlanta readers🙃).

+In the know: A team of scientists funded by the NOAA MAPP Program found the main cause of heat domes is a strong change (or gradient) in ocean temperatures from west to east in the tropical Pacific Ocean during the preceding winter.
