More Americans are surviving cancer than ever before, per a new report from the American Association for Cancer Research published on Wednesday.
🔢📈 By the numbers… There are 18 million cancer survivors living in the US today, or 5.5% of the overall population. In 1971, there were just 3 million cancer survivors living in the US, or 1.4% of the population.
🇺🇸 The big picture: People are being diagnosed earlier and living longer due to better access to care, higher screening rates, and improved treatments. And one additional major factor? We’re not smoking as much.
But even though the death rate keeps declining, cancer is still the second most common cause of death in the US, killing ~600,000 Americans each year. Only heart disease leads to more deaths (800,000+/year).
🏥 All US adults under the age of 65 should be routinely screened for anxiety disorders, and all Americans over 18 should be checked for symptoms of depression, a government-backed panel recommended yesterday.
📱 The Pentagon recently ordered a sweeping audit of how it conducts psychological ops online, WaPo reported yesterday. The reason for this sudden introspection? Social media platforms identified and removed ~150 fake accounts they suspected were run by the US military
