Do you support the elimination of federal taxes for workers’ tips?

👍 Yes (32%) – "Because lower tip-based income workers depend on it. A combination of increased wage base at the Federal and State levels, tax-free tipping, as well as the implementation of regulations aimed at curbing any negative side-effects of these new laws, would be optimal towards prompting a more qualitative lifestyle for the struggling lower income workers."

  • "Tips should NOT be taxed unless the person is earning a living wage; Federal minimum wage should be raised to $20 per hour, just as a start. I also note that tip taxes should ONLY be eliminated for those in the service sectors, NOT wealth creater sectors; those types should have their taxes raised substantially, and have loopholes plugged. WE need honest and fair taxing for ALL!"

"I would imagine this tip exemption would come with a limit (tips earned over a year up to X amount of $) This would definitely help those that depend on tips to earn a living while minimizing the risk of this loop hole being taken advantage of."

👎 No (42%) – "It doesn’t make sense that they wouldn’t be taxed as any other American citizen who had a lower paying job. Also, many servers make significant income from tips that often surpasses salaries of “higher paid” salaried or hourly employees. Why should they be exempt from earning money on their wages just like every other person? What would be better legislation is to legislate that servers be paid a livable wage and help eliminate tip culture which has gotten out of control in America."

  • "Service workers whose total compensation includes tips should pay taxes on total compensation just like regular workers do. Creating a tax break for tips would most likely result is lower base wages for service workers with the expectation of customers now bearing the increase out of their pockets."

"I understand the intent and appreciate the consideration of relieving lower-income worked from the burden of taxes; however, tips are income and therefore should be taxed. The real issue is that businesses and employers need to be paying their staff working wages and not leaving it up to customers to ensure staff are paid appropriately."

  • "Income is income whether straight salary or tips. The best scenario, as found in most of the world outside the US, is pay workers a decent wage and eliminate the tip culture entirely. Tip jars have become rampant, showing up everywhere, enough is enough."

🤷 Unsure/other (26%) – "To tax or not to tax tips is a distraction from the fact that the federal minimum wage hasn't increased since 2009, while the cost of living has increased by more than 36%. It is insidious and deceitful, the politicians flaunting their position on tips do so to steal attention away from the true causes of wealth inequality and reduced buying power."

  • "I think it's fine for those in the service sector such as wait staff, bartenders, etc. But not for those who want to restructure their income like lawyers, hedge fund managers, or financial advisors can get the break. This should definitely have an hourly/annual wage income limit."

"I’m in favor of this IF the income threshold is capped and is limited to service workers. I worry that employers would decrease their hourly wage even more or make them rely entirely on tips. I see the point of lost revenue also. I don’t want someone or some company claiming that their entire income is solely “tips” when in fact it is not. There are many pros and cons to this issue. I hope they can come to a compromise that makes everyone happy - although these days that seems impossible!"
