Will incumbency play a significant role in deciding your vote in primary or general elections this midterm season?

Yes (32%) – "The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over but expecting a different result. Since term limits aren't a thing (and we sooooo desperately need them) voters can institute our own term limits and vote in new people. Voting for an incumbent, in my mind, is the very definition of insanity. We keep sending these people back and expect things to be different. As far as I am concerned, vote all the incumbents out!"

  • "The Congress, both parties, have failed time after time, to exert their Constitutional responsibilities. They have chosen party over country, personal aggrandizement over the needs of the People. They all deserve to be turned out as a warning to future congress members that they have a job that does not include mindless servitude to the White House. Congress do your job! Or find another job."

"Absolutely! If you have been in office for any length of time and your only idea is to toe the party line and not actually represent the people who elected you, it's time to go."

No (64%) – "Personally, I vote for the person, not the party. So if a challenger is a better fit for the position than an incumbent, has a strong background, is knowledgeable about current political events, and is willing to serve all people in their district, then they will EARN my vote. I also take into consideration age. We need more middle-aged people in the office. If you meet Social Security age criteria for retirement, then that is what a politician should do: become a political consultant."

  • "I don't care how long you've been in Congress as long as you're doing the work, but if you're not in there fighting for the people you're out the door."

"This country needs DRASTIC updates/changes to our political system and around who is elected to represent our American life. While I respect that seasoned elected politicians know more about "the inner workings" of state and national politics, I also can see that some of the more "established" politicians are not standing up against vile, ignorant Trump, and are NOT doing anything to protect our citizens, our laws, and our lives."

  • "If the person has not been doing their job and they aren't working for the people in my district/state, they deserve to lose their jobs."

"I'm an independent, so I don't typically vote in primaries, though I will occasionally change my registration for one. I can tell you that I would 100% vote for someone who is more moderate, whether democrat or republican. These extreme candidates on either side are exhausting. I can't imagine that the average America isn't tired of it as well. I'm showing my age, but can we go back to an era when both parties were just a step away from middle?"

  • "I am an independent in MA who will be voting democratic and looking into the profile and background of anyone running whose record I am not familiar with to determine their merit. I will not be voting for any other party other than democratic"

Unsure/other (8%) – "Being an incumbent during one of the most ineffective eras of Congress in US history is definitely a black mark on the resume in my opinion. But that designation also applies to some who I'd consider worthwhile lawmakers."
