Do you support or oppose California’s new proposal to impose a one-time 5% wealth tax on billionaires?

Support (39%) – "If they already paid their fair share, this wouldn’t be an issue. Because of all the cuts and subsidies they have access to, they pay a much lower rate than the average worker. I don’t think this is the best way forward, but if they won’t pay at least the same rate as their workers, they should be obligated to pay a one time charge."

• "It's past time for billionaires to pay their fair share in taxes. Since WWII , their tax rate has been lowered a number of times while everyone else's has been raised. If you're going to use state resources to make your money, then you need to pay your taxes."

"Getting rid of special interests in the state is a good thing. So if billionaires leave, the state and many municipalities will have to build things in a way that benefits residents in the long term instead of relying on a few wealthy individuals (even though they're paying way less per Sqft than a normal person.)"

• "The fact that these ultra wealthy can just pick up and move to avoid paying (MUCH LESS than) their fair share and one of the main concerns is having enough information on them to be able to implement is ridiculous. There are so many loopholes for these hoarders to hide their assets and avoid accountability. One-time 5% tax is pennies to them."

Oppose (43%) – "I oppose this on so many levels, and no, I'm not wealthy. First, you can't back charge people. If you want to impose something like this, you'd need to set it in the future, so people can opt in or out by moving. Second, it's a slippery slope. It's easy for everyone to hate billionaires, but what is next? They'll lower the wealth tier for sure and begin taxing more and more. And third, you can't tax someone on holdings. Income is one thing, holding is another. I can't imagine this wouldn't be taken to the Supreme Court and ruled unconstitutional."

• "We have plenty of evidence that the billionaires will simply move out of state. Losing the revenue they produced. Then, possibly move their businesses too. This is not a well thought out idea. Just a moronic knee-jerk response."

"I'm not a friend of billionaires but double taxation is a no go. That's just greed on the side of the politicians. They have to learn, like the rest of us, that sometimes you can't afford every little thing you set your eyes on and cuts have to be made. To me this is plain old robbery what they are trying to do. And retroactively? I don't think that's even close to being legal."

• "Capital will flee the state and the voters the money is ultimately intended to help will once again be without. And this is never, ever, ever a "1-time tax". That's how it ALWAYS starts. But the beautiful thing about our democracy is at the Local, State, and Federal level we the voters get to carry out these experiments. We just need to be prepared to take on the unintended consequences and hopefully learn the right lessons."

Unsure/other (18%) – "Billionaires are not the problem. The problem is a budget that outpaces revenue and government overrreach and literally so many other things done with taxpayer money, without taxpayer approval. This tax won’t be fix ANYTHING. It will only prove that the state is willing to bully its richest inhabitants so it can get even more money to waste."

• "While a great way to raise funds, there is no concrete way to ensure the funding generated remains stable. Does every new billionaire living there have to agree to pay upon reaching billionaire status, how does the government plan to make sure that all have paid it, and are never charged again?"
