Good morning and welcome to Monday. Have you ever wondered what a black hole sounds like?

Well you don’t have to anymore, thanks to NASA. Take a listen.

If you pay close attention, you’ll notice it sounds a lot like Dory speaking whale. Ipso facto, whales are aliens.

We always knew there was something sneaky about those blowholes...

Today is Victory Day...

Image: TIME

🇷🇺 ...one of the most important holidays on the Russian calendar, with an annual parade in Moscow to mark the anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

  • The festivities this year will take place amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine, which President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly called a continuation of Russia’s WWII fight against Nazis and fascism.

🪖 A deeper dive… Moscow has scaled down this year’s parade by roughly 35%, according to Forbes, which reported that some of the troops and equipment usually featured in the celebration are currently deployed in Ukraine.

  • Some Western analysts predict Putin will use his Victory Day speech to formally declare war on Ukraine and order a national mobilization, allowing reserve Russian troops to be called up for active duty; Moscow has publicly denied these claims.
  • Others suggest Russia could use this occasion to declare ‘victory’ in Ukraine, portraying its new land bridge connecting the mainland to the Crimean Peninsula as a triumph.

🇺🇦 Zoom out: Ukraine’s deputy prime minister confirmed on Saturday that “all women, children and elderly people'' have been evacuated from the besieged steel plant in Mariupol, which houses the last pocket of Ukrainian resistance in the city. Also over the weekend, local authorities in the Luhansk region said a Russian airstrike is believed to have killed 60 people sheltering in a village school.

+In the know: Putin takes Russian anniversaries seriously; his invasion of Ukraine earlier this year came the day after Defender of the Fatherland Day, a celebration of the country's military achievements. In 2014, Putin took the first step in annexing Crimea on that same occasion.

Online ADHD Meds: Useful or Dangerous?

Image: Getty

Cerebral, a SoftBank-backed online mental health startup valued at $4.8 billion, is being investigated by the DOJ for possible violations of the Controlled Substances Act, the company disclosed on Saturday.

💊 What’s going on?... Part of the startup's business involves diagnosing and prescribing meds to treat ADHD. In March, the WSJ reported some of Cerebral’s nurse practitioners felt pressured by the company to prescribe stimulants, and also thought Cerebral’s 30-minute evaluations weren’t long enough to accurately diagnose ADHD.

A former Cerebral exec also filed a lawsuit last month alleging something similar; the company has denied all claims of wrongdoing.

  • On May 2, Cerebral’s preferred online pharmacy, Truepill, stopped filling prescriptions for all stimulants “out of an abundance of caution” – a trend seen across the industry, per the WSJ, which reported that pharmacies including Walmart, CVS and Walgreens have blocked or delayed prescriptions for companies treating ADHD online.
  • A Cerebral spokesperson said the startup received a DOJ subpoena on the evening of May 4, hours after the company announced it would stop writing new prescriptions for stimulants that treat ADHD, like Adderall and Ritalin.

📸 Big picture: The number of ADHD drugs dispensed in the US rose at an annualized rate of 6.1% from 2010 to 2013 to reach 80 million prescriptions, according to the latest available data

Into the Metaverse of Movie Madness

Image: Tenor

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness earned ~$450 million worldwide at the box office this past weekend, the second-biggest opening of the pandemic era behind Spider-Man: No Way Home ($601 million).

🔮 A deeper dive…

  • Premium formats accounted for 36% of ticket sales. DS2’s global haul for IMAX tickets alone was $33 million, a May record. (Context: the film was shot using IMAX digital cameras.)
  • Another potential draw: The new 3D trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water is exclusively available in theaters before Multiverse; it’s not yet officially online.

☝️🤔 One interesting thing: The estimated domestic audience demographics were 62% male and 16% under age 18.

📸 Big picture: Box office gross revenues are still down 45% compared to 2019. But Doctor Strange 2 is playing in 4,545 theaters, the widest location count of the pandemic era and the fifth-biggest of all time, a sign that the movie business is emerging from the pandemic, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

  • While overall attendance is still down compared to “normal” times, moviegoer confidence is at or near all-time highs.

🍿 It’s about to be a hot girl blockbuster summer… All debuting before the end of July: Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic World: Dominion, Lightyear, Minions: The Rise of Gru, and Thor: Love and Thunder.

We’re One Step Closer to a Password-less Future

Image: Tiger Computing

Apple, Google and Microsoft announced Thursday morning that they’ve joined forces to build support for passwordless sign-in across all of the mobile, desktop, and browser platforms that they control in the coming year.

⚙️ How it works… To use a rough analogy, this future login process is like two-factor authentication and password managers on steroids.

  • When you sign into a website or app on your phone, all you’ll need to do is simply unlock your phone – no separate password needed. Instead, your phone will store a FIDO credential called a passkey which is used to unlock your online account.
  • To sign into a website on your computer, you’ll just need your phone nearby since you’ll be prompted to unlock it for access. But after you’ve done this once, you won’t need your phone again and can sign in just by unlocking your computer.

📝🤔 Bottom line: According to Google, this new process makes signing in far more secure, as it’s based on public key cryptography and is only shown to your online account when you unlock your phone.

  • Weak and easily guessable passwords account for more than 80% of all data breaches, per Verizon’s annual data breach report.
