🗣 Dose of Discussion: A 360° Look at a Hot-Button Issue

November is coming into focus

Image: Indiana Daily Student

Midterm primary elections were held across four states this week, along with a separate special runoff election for an open House seat in South Texas.

🏛️ Special election: In Texas, Republican Mayra Flores prevailed over Democrat Dan Sanchez by a roughly 8-point margin, flipping a seat formerly held by Dems; she’ll be the first-ever Mexican-born Congresswoman. The election was unique for this cycle in that it was held under last decade’s redistricting lines, in a district which President Biden had won by 4 points.

🗳️ Midterm primaries: In South Carolina, incumbent Rep. Tom Rice – who voted to impeach former President Trump – lost to Trump-endorsed GOP challenger Russell Fry, while incumbent Rep. Nancy Mace won her primary against a Trump-backed candidate.

  • Former Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R) will take on incumbent Gov. Janet Mills (D) after the two advanced past Tuesday primaries that were all-but-formalities.

Image: FiveThirtyEight

☝️ Big picture: Republicans currently hold a 2.5-point advantage over Democrats in FiveThirtyEight’s aggregation of generic congressional polls.

  • President Biden’s approval rating is now below 40% for the first time in his presidency, per FiveThirtyEight, while RealClearPolitics also has it pegged at 39.9%
  • Presidential approval ratings are usually a good indicator of what'll happen in the midterms.

⏱ Speed Rounds: Quick, Impactful Stories

Your 2026 World Cup host cities are…

Image: Axios

FIFA announced the 16 North American cities that will host matches for the 2026 World Cup, selecting 11 locations in the US, three in Mexico, and two in southern Canada. Locations for particular matches, including the playoff rounds and final, will be announced later.

⚽🏟️ More deets... 2026 will be the first time the tournament includes 48 teams instead of the current 32-team format. It’ll also be the first World Cup spread across three different host nations, who submitted a joint bid under the motto "Unity. Certainty. Opportunity."

  • The US previously hosted the World Cup in 1984, while Mexico hosted in 1970 and 1986. Canada has never done so.
  • Their collective bid highlighted the major financial opportunity posed by hosting the games in North America, as well as the ease and certainty of using large-capacity stadiums already in use, NPR reports.

🤑 Show me the money: Individual host cities can expect to see a net benefit of approximately $90 million to $480 million per city after accounting for potential public costs.

🇶🇦 But first… The 2022 World Cup kicks off on November 21 in Qatar.

Delta Sky Club attendants, probably

Image: Giphy

A new Delta policy went into effect this month, restricting how early travelers can access its Sky Club lounge before its flights. Good news though: if you have a layover, Delta 360 status, or Amex’s Centurion Card (aka the ‘Black Card’), you're exempted.

💰💳🛀 Background: Airline passengers can access Delta’s lounges – featuring free food, drinks, and often showers – in airports across the world by purchasing a membership (between $545 and $845 per year), or by enrolling in certain high-interest credit cards or frequent flier programs.

📣 Back to the announcement... While previously passengers could come-and-go as they please, Delta's new policy limits Sky Club access to within three hours of departure time.

  • When the new policy was first announced, Delta had said travelers also wouldn’t be able to access its lounges upon arriving at their destination, but the company quickly reversed course after customer backlash.
  • A Delta spokesperson told the WSJ the change was necessary to manage larger crowds while maintaining a high level of service, as travel demand picks back up after the pandemic despite record-high prices.

🌎✈️ Zoom out: Major US airlines are on track to hire more than 10,000 pilots this year, which would be roughly double the previous all-time record.

Madrid: The next Windy City?

Image: Madrid Nuevo Norte

The Spanish capital of Madrid plans to construct a giant new park with a “wind garden”... but not just any wind garden. This one's designed to reduce temperatures within the city by redirecting cool breezes through its streets.

🇪🇸🌬️ More deets... The spiral structure, made of green vegetation like mosses and ferns, will rise above the tree tops to catch cooler breezes, drawing them down towards the surface of the park.

  • Studies have found that the wind garden, combined with shady avenues of trees and irrigation systems, could help to reduce city temps by as much as 7.2°F, per The Times; Madrid’s average daytime temp in the summer is 91.4°F.

🌍 Zoom out: Madrid’s project draws inspiration from similar setups in the Middle East, where people used wind towers to cool their homes long before AC was invented.

⚽️🏟🧠 World Cup on the mind... The Khalifa International Stadium, Qatar's main arena for 2022 FIFA World Cup, is primarily cooled by a massive tower that captures wind and prevents the cold from escaping.

  • Its engineers claim it's the world’s coolest open-air venue, despite average daily outside temps around 100°F.

🐶❤️ Furry Friends Friday: Finding Ginger

Image: Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin

Ginger and her human Barney were always inseparable. The Wisconsin man brought Ginger everywhere with him, including on weekly shopping trips, so he was understandably heartbroken when his pup was stolen right out of the car while on a run to the store.

  • Barney's looked for his girl for half a decade now, never giving up hope that Ginger was out there somewhere.

🕗 Five years later... When the Beloit Police Deptartment posted a picture of a found stray dog, Barney knew in his heart it was his Ginger. And Ginger knew in her heart that it was her human.🥺

  • ”She was so excited she wanted to break down the door to get to them. It was tear-jerking for sure,” said a shelter employee. ”This shows you that you should not give up whether it’s months or years it doesn’t matter. There is still a chance at the end that your animal is going to come home.”
