🗣 Dose of Discussion: A 360° Look at a Hot-Button Issue | | Overturned: The Facts + a 360 View | Image: SupremeCourt.gov | In a 5-4 decision on Friday, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a 1973 ruling that provided a constitutional basis for abortion rights.
🇺🇸 So… what happens now? The court's decision paves the way for individual states to allow, regulate, or ban abortion procedures, creating a patchwork of new laws across the US.
- 13 GOP-led states have ‘trigger laws’ banning most or all abortions that come into effect up to 30 days after Roe v. Wade is overturned; in total, at least 22 states are expected to ban or heavily restrict abortions in the coming months or years, per the WSJ.
- 16 Democrat-led states plus D.C. have laws on the books establishing protections for abortion.
- In states with no preexisting laws regarding abortion, the procedure is still allowed.
⚖️ A loophole?... People in states with restricted abortion access still have two legal options, according to AG Merrick Garland.
- On Friday, he published a statement saying the DOJ will protect the right of all Americans to travel out of state for abortion appointments, and asserted that the abortion pill mifepristone can’t be banned by states since it’s been approved by the FDA.
- Experts say it’s unclear if Garland’s claims about the abortion pill will hold up in court.
🔢📊 By the numbers: After decades of decline, the number of abortions in the US rose almost 8% from 2017 to 2020, according to a report published this month by the Guttmacher Institute, an abortion rights group.
- About 1 in 5 pregnancies in 2020 ended in abortion, and more than half of those (54%) were medication abortions, up from 39% in 2017.

⏱ Speed Rounds: Quick, Impactful Stories | | Russia defaults on its debt | Image: Kacper Pempel/Reuters | Russia missed payments on two bonds that were due last night, defaulting on its foreign debt for the first time since the 1918 Bolshevik Revolution.
🚫🏦 A deeper dive… The designation isn’t expected to have any immediate impact, as Russian bonds have been trading for pennies on the dollar since days after its invasion of Ukraine – a sign that investors believed default was probable.
- But in the longer term, a default will make it more difficult for Russia to re-enter international financial markets if/when sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine expire.
- Legal challenges regarding the default will likely play out over the next several years. Moscow has accused the West of creating an artificial default by refusing to accept payment in rubles and preventing Russia from accessing or transferring foreign currency.
🇺🇦 In other Russia/Ukraine news: The Ukrainian Army withdrew from Severodonetsk, the US and other G7 members banned imports of Russian gold, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the world is facing an "unprecedented global hunger crisis" exacerbated in part by the war in Ukraine.

Snoop D-O–Double G, no that’s not me | Images: Fair.xyz/Shutterstock | A Snoop Dogg impersonator who called himself “Doop Snogg” fooled an NFT conference in NYC last week, in a stunt intended to draw attention to rampant fraud in the digital art industry.
The idea came from a small NFT startup called Fair.xyz, which first considered a Justin Bieber lookalike but ultimately decided on Snoop due to his involvement in several crypto projects.
🎶🧃 With so much drama in N-Y-C… Apparently it’s not that hard being Snoop D-O-double-g.
- The hired actor applied makeup, glued on a fake mustache, and stuffed paper in his shoes to appear taller, then hit the streets of the NFT.NYC crypto conference with a fake security guard and a nametag that read “Doop Snogg.”
- Many of the attendees who bumped into the imposter were tricked, droppin’ NFTs like it was hot. “Literally within a minute, you’ve got 50 people near us, 100 people near us, plugging their project, throwing business cards after us. It was intense,” said Fair.xyz’s head marketing director.
- Others just shook hands and took pictures. From one tweet: "My hand[s] are shaky but I think I just caught @SnoopDogg. Thank you for the selfie."
📸📉 The big picture: The NFT market is down 92% from its peak last September, and has been plagued by numerous reports of scams and fraud. OpenSea, the world’s largest NFT platform, said in January that roughly 80% of the NFTs created through its tools were fraudulent.

Space Stations: The New Frontier | Image: US Air Force Research Lab | Earlier this month, scientists at Xidian University in China announced a successful test of new technology that would enable a space-based solar power plant to beam energy down to Earth.
☀️🛰🌏 Beam me down, Scotty… The research is part of a state-run initiative to develop satellites that can convert solar energy into microwaves, then beam those energy-infused microwaves down to Earth from an orbit of up to 250 miles.
- By 2028, Beijing plans to launch a satellite capable of beaming 10 kilowatts of power to a ground station.
- The capacity is projected to grow to 1 megawatt by 2030 and 10 megawatts by 2035, eventually resulting in a 2-gigawatt station by 2050 that’s capable of powering a large city.
🧠 In the know: While the idea of beaming solar energy down to Earth from space isn’t new, recent developments in key technical areas – like lightweight solar panels, wireless energy transmission, and space robotics – have made the prospect more achievable.
⚡️ Zoom out: Other governments are also on the power station in space prowl. The UK in March said it’s considering a $21+ billion proposal to build one that could be online by 2035, and NASA is reportedly considering a $100 million experiment to power a remote military base from space as early as 2025.

- On the flip side, the cable company points to an independent study that found 99.85% of Starlink customers "will experience 0 harmful interference with 5G."
