✨ Mantra of the Week ✨

Everything I need is already within me. I add something special to the world.

👏🔦 The Sweet Spotlight

🐾 A lucky little bunch

Images: Fayetteville Animal Protection Society

It was a cold, stormy day in North Carolina. Employees at the Fayetteville Animal Protection Society came into work to find a broken dog crate secured with zip ties on their porch.

On the crate was a hand-written letter: “Please help!" it said. "I found these puppies sadly after noticing a local stray dog that I would often feed when I could [was] dead … by the road … she had been hit by a car. I knew from feeding her she had puppies somewhere, and finally from searching where I would usually see her, I found them.”

  • The note went on to apologize for leaving the puppies, but explained that the anonymous writer was homeless with no means of caring for the dogs.
  • “I just want them to be given the chance their mother like myself was never given,” they wrote. “Please do not think poorly of me but it felt wrong leaving them in the cold waiting on a mother that would not be coming home.”

Luckily, the shelter employees got there just in time. And while the puppies were all a little cold and hungry, they were otherwise in perfect health.

❤️ A new beginning: All five puppies, now named Fortune, Kismet, Chance, Fate, and Serendipity to reflect their miraculous journey, will be put up for adoption soon to local residents.

But this story isn't quite over yet. The shelter and community are now working to identify the rescuer and help them get back on their feet.

In hopes of finding the anonymous rescuer, the shelter staff posted a message on Facebook offering for them to come in and visit the pups.

  • “To this compassionate individual, wherever you are, we want you to know that your act of kindness has not gone unnoticed,” wrote Jackie Peery, executive director of the no-kill, nonprofit shelter, on Facebook. “Your empathy in the face of adversity gives us hope and inspiration.”
  • While she hasn't heard back yet, she is hopeful the mysterious rescuer will stop into the shelter and be able to get the assistance they need.

🥳 Happy birthday, Edie!

Image: Suzanne Picetti

For the last 16 years, the town of Willits, California, has thrown resident Edith “Edie” Recagno Keenan Ceccarelli a birthday party.

Edie has spent her whole life living in the small town, and, as the second oldest person on record in the world, the community is proud to celebrate her.

🎁 A yearly celebration... The Willits community started throwing Edie a birthday celebration for her 100th. 16 years later, it's become an annual town tradition.

  • Each year, Edie's birthday celebration consists of morning desserts around 11:30 am, followed by a nap before the afternoon parade in her honor.
  • According to The US Sun, the birthday girl is known for her sense of fashion as well as her love for dancing, cooking, and walks.

🍩 DONUT Holes

🐾 Leaving her legacy... Hollyann Russo always had a passion for animals. Before she passed, the mom told her family that she wanted her love for animals to live on with them. Last month, in honor of Hollyann, her husband and children did just that, donating treats and toys to every single adoptable pup at the Arizona Humane Society's South Mountain campus.

❤️ Supermoms... In 2022, the Washington DC local government announced a new program that would offer $10,800 over the course of a year – no strings attached – to 132 new and expecting low-income mothers. For many of the recipients, the unexpected funds changed their lives. Check out some of the stories here.

🎭 Remembering a legend... Broadway icon Chita Rivera passed away last week at 91 years old. The theater legend had been in the spotlight since 1957, when she starred as Anita in Stephen Sondheim's West Side Story. And she was still dancing on New York’s Broadway stages a half-century later in 2015’s The Visit. Read more about her amazing legacy, in which she paved the way for many Latin performers, here.

💸 Pay it forward... It's Black History Month, "an annual celebration of accomplishments and contributions made by African Americans, highlighting their central role in the history of the United States." In honor of the occasion, consider donating to one of the top charities supporting Black communities this year.

😌 Mindfulness Moments

Meditation mood:

When most people hear the word "meditation," they picture someone cross-legged, eyes closed, breathing deep into stillness. Like this👆.

Yes – sitting still can be a powerful form of meditation. But there are multiple ways to practice mindfulness, including something as simple as going for an intentional walk outside. Like this👇.

So, take 10 minutes to get up and get moving with this guided walking meditation. It'll take you through some simple practices to help you remain present and reduce anxiety while on a walk.

What're you waiting for?🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️

🏆 What's Your Win?

🥳 It's finally time

What's Your Win is here🤩.

Welcome to my personal favorite part of the newsletter, where we get to celebrate all of the good news happening right here within our Positive DONUT community.

There's always something to celebrate. Check out this week's wins!

❤️‍🩹 Maggie C. from Hamilton is healing with her Dad...

  • "A few months after my Mum passed away I was able to have my Dad clear out a small area of the kitchen as a first step to moving forward," she shared. "I put aside my 'need to clear things all up' and stayed with my Dad's place and was able to hang out and stay by his side, letting him do things at his pace. Some progress with the clutter and it was low stress for both of us :)."

❄️ Gabriella H. from Knoxville, Tennessee, is loving the snow days...

  • "We just got 8 inches of snow in one day, and it is supposed to keep snowing, so we have gotten 4 days off of school so far! I am hoping we get the rest of this week off as well! Snow is very unusual for Knoxville, so everything has shut down because nobody knows what to do with it 😂. As someone who lived in snowy areas for most of my life, it is extremely funny to watch people freak out over a little snow."

💪 Louise M. from London, England, is learning to self advocate...

  • "I properly advocated for myself and what I wanted at my doctors appointment. Usually I’m so scared to stand up for myself, but this time I stood strong and confidently told him the outcome I wanted and it worked! It was so nice to be taken seriously and to be working towards figuring out what’s going on 🤞🏻"

🇨🇦 Andres H. from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, is grateful for his new home...

  • "I recently became a permanent resident of Canada. After more than 7 years of long-distance and visiting from Europe, the sad days of having to say goodbye to my wife at the airport are over."
