👏🔦 The Sweet Spotlight

❤️ Growing up and growing old

Images: Belong Chester/Ready Generations

In America alone, more than $3.7 billion is put towards dementia research each year. The research is still ongoing, but indicates that keeping active, learning new things, and having genuine fun reduces symptoms and slows memory loss in patients.

And who better to introduce learning and fun to the elderly than the absolute fun professionals: toddlers.

The old and the restless... The Belong Center in Chester, UK, is a senior care village that specializes in dementia patient care. The living facility sits on a $24.5 million, state-of-the-art area that includes six family-sized 24-hour care households, 23 independent living apartments, a bistro, a gym, and – get this – a preschool.

  • The idea behind opening the preschool on the care facility campus was to aid both the children and elders. The kids are involved in multiple aspects of residents' lives, including mealtimes, arts-n-crafts activities, and movement and exercise classes.

While the program has been running since last year, it recently celebrated its official grand opening.

💥 The impact: "The Nursery is already transforming lives for the better, with intergenerational living contributing to reduced anxiety, and relatives reporting that being around children means people with dementia are less agitated," Belong's website reads.

Belong also reports that engaging with the nursery children offers a renewed sense of purpose to many of the elders.

  • "By supporting the children’s learning through storytelling, reading, sharing memories and teaching simple skills, there is improved cognitive functioning and mental well-being," they share. "Residents are turning into educators and there has been notable reductions in isolation and loneliness."

🚒 From the firehouse to family

Images: Brittany Tyler

In May of 2022, a newborn was left on the steps of a Louisville fire station with a note that simply said: "I love you."

Experienced foster parents Chris and Brittany Tyler applied to foster the baby as soon as his story made the local news. Four days later, he was signed over to their care.

  • The baby spent multiple weeks in the NICU before heading home with Chris, Brittany, and their two adopted sons. As soon as he was home, they knew he was meant to be a permanent part of the family.
  • In December 2023, Samuel Tyler was officially adopted.

🫂 Love to his mother... Chris and Brittany hope news makes it to Samuel's birth mom that he has found a permanent home. “While we may never know her, we understand where her heart was,” Chris told the Washington Post. “She loved him, and for that reason, we have love for her as well.”

  • “We hope that she knows he is safe, he is happy and he is loved,” Brittany added.

🍩 DONUT Holes

🧠 Talk about full circle... Kevin Eaise was only 10 years old when he underwent surgery for a brain tumor that was causing double vision. Fourteen years later, he's now working as a clinical research assistant alongside the very doctor who performed the surgery.

🏔️ Explore the outdoors... From the beaches of Honolulu to the marshes of the Carolinas and everything in between – the top 10 most-visited US National Parks were just ranked for 2023, with the #1 park attracting an incredible 16.75 million visitors. Which park do you think came #1?

🪺 Bird besties... As much as we love our fur babies, having animal fur all over the clothes and furniture can be a bit of a nuisance. One cat dad got creative with his cat's excessive shedding, however, putting the fur out on the porch for birds to use for their nests

🏆 What's Your Win?

😎 All we do is win win win...

Welcome to my favorite part of the newsletter, What's Your Win, where we celebrate all of the good news happening right here within the DONUT community. There's good all around us, sometimes you just need to shift your perspective to see it.

Check out the submissions we received this week!

🎉 Melissa K. from Almont, Michigan, is making big moves at work...

  • "Only 3 months into my new role as a Product Developer, I was tasked with being a lead in a HUGE project for our company that had to be completed in an extremely short amount of time. As of Monday, the final portion of my project went live and we have had great feedback from our organization on the changes we implemented. This project called for long hours, weekend work, lots of stakeholders, and nonstop craziness, but talk about my first project being a huge success! :)"

💪 Rusty T. from Waterford, Pennsylvania, is getting active...

  • "I am 71 with COPD. Being active can be hard, especially in the winter. Today I made a commitment to do nine chair exercises every day. Day 1 is under my belt!! Wish me luck."

🥳 Mariana M. from Phoenix, Arizona, is celebrating her mom...

  • "I am thrilled because I helped my mom apply and prepare for a job interview that would double her salary and HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE she GOT THE JOB. This job will help my mom switch from tons of stress, manual labor, hot/freezing cooking temperatures, to an office to herself with no manual labor and no stress about being short-staffed. As a young professional (me) I can't give back to my parents in the grand way I would like to yet, but having done this by my mom's side really fills my heart and I wish her all the best. I am so proud of her."

🐴 Gretchen T. from Guilford, Connecticut, is seeing her lifelong dream come true...

  • "My entire life I have always wanted a horse. I grew up riding and it's always been my favorite hobby and pastime. Last year, my husband and I bought a farmhouse property and have been renting out the barn to other horse owners to board their horses – but I've been keeping one stall empty in hopes of getting my own baby. Well, my dream finally came true this month when I adopted this gorgeous boy!! Everybody meet Tucker. I can't believe he's all mine and at 54 my childhood dream is finally coming true."👇
