👏🔦 The Sweet Spotlight

Inside the medical school that's now free-ninety-nine

Image: David Dee Delgado/NY Times

For years, Ruth Gottesman worked as a professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, a medical school in the Bronx, New York.

While teaching at Einstein, Ruth developed new diagnostic modalities and treatments for children with learning disabilities, The Guardian reports. She also ran an adult literacy program.

Her latest big move: The 93-year-old widow just ensured the school would be completely tuition-free moving forward, donating $1 billion to the school in honor of her late husband.

  • “I’m happy to share with you," the former professor announced to the student body last week, "that starting in August this year, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine will be tuition-free." The auditorium burst into applause👇.

Ruth's donation is one of the largest charitable donations to an educational institution in the US, and most likely the largest ever to a medical school.

  • She received the funds from her late husband David Gottesman, known as Sandy. He grew his wealth as an early investor in Berkshire Hathaway, the multinational conglomerate that was built by the billionaire Warren Buffett.
  • Upon Sandy's passing in 2022 at the age of 96, he left his wife with his fortune and the simple instructions to “do whatever you think is right with it."
  • Ruth didn't even think twice. “I wanted to fund students at Einstein so that they would receive free tuition,” she shared.

👀 Looking ahead... Ruth's donation is extra significant because of the medical school's Bronx location, which is surrounded by one of the poorest congressional districts in the country. With over half of the school's population being New Yorkers and a majority women and people of color, Ruth hopes her donation alleviates some of the financial burden students may face upon graduation.

🤗 Sometimes you just need a hug

Image: Ramiro Pereyra

Since 2010, the Provincial Maternity Hospital of Córdoba, located in Argentina, has implemented a volunteer hugger program for babies in need.

  • Each volunteer hugger is paired with a premature infant in the NICU for two hours at a time, assisting with the neurodevelopment of the baby while the mother is unable to be there for various reasons.
  • On top of the 50 certified volunteers, there are more than 200 people on the waiting list to become a hugger.

💬 What they're saying: “I want [the babies] to be certain that, since they were born, they’ve been loved and accepted," one of the volunteers shared with El País. "It’s amazing how [valiant] they are; they have such a desire to live."

🍩🌳 DONUT Holes: Conservation edition

🦜 Positive parrots... In 2016, only three critically endangered female orange-bellied parrots returned to their breeding ground in Tasmania. However, thanks to some incredible conservation efforts, over 80 parrots returned this year – the highest number in 15 years.

🦋 Hope for the butterflies... The Behren’s silverspot butterfly is a rare, bright orange butterfly native to Northern California. While currently critically endangered, conservationists just announced a four-year plan to introduce the butterflies back to their region – and it all starts with the planting of flowers🌸.

🐸 Toad on the road... Hundreds of people in the UK have stepped forward as "toad patrol volunteers," scouring the roads in the pouring rain to save frogs and toads from danger. Last year, England’s 203 amphibian rescue groups saved at least 115,000 animals from the roads.

🌍 Pay it forward... The Nature Conservancy works tirelessly to "tackle the climate emergency, species loss, and the destruction of nature." Consider donating here

🏆 What's Your Win?

🥳 Let's celebrate you

What's Your Win is the section of the newsletter where we get to celebrate all of the positive news happening right here within our DONUT community. There's always something to be grateful for; check out our submissions this week!

💖 Lacey P. from Temecula, California, had a special Valentine's Day...

  • "For the past two Valentine's Days, I've been making chocolate-covered fudge with my Mom for my friends. I made more this year, and I got new colors, shapes, and flavor ideas! I was pretty excited to take a break and make some sweet treats for my friends while spending time with my Mom."

✏️ Lauren M. from Newark, Ohio, is grateful for her teacher...

  • "My current events teacher, Mr. Mummey, is amazing. He had us all subscribe to The DONUT to get great news updates for class. Having him be a part of our school community for my senior year is a huge personal win because of how supported he makes all of his students feel. Every time I give him a fun fact or a small drawing on one of my quizzes, it is an extra point. It is always so important when a teacher makes their students feel valued. He is coaching baseball, helped lead the Catholic retreat, and teaches three different courses all during not only his first year as a teacher, but also during one of the hardest years our school has ever had. Here's to Mr. Mummey, the coolest teacher I know."

❤️‍🩹 Kim H. is finding comfort through grief...

  • "In December, we had to put our 12 year old dog down due to illness, which broke our whole family's hearts. Out of our family, I was his person. He had to be near me, he listened to me, he jumped for joy when I got home even if I just walked to the mailbox. Though he can never be replaced, three weeks ago we adopted a three-year-old cat that had been a stray. We connected at the shelter when she would only hide from everyone else. She's still very unsure about any room except our bedroom and about most other people except me. She wants to be near me and have her petting her all the time and knew my voice from day one. So, I think my dear dog sent her to us/me to let us/me know that he is okay and to help heal my heart just a little bit. Thanks Diesel, Theadora (Thea) is a wonderful gift👇."

🌃 Kailyn T. (oh hey that's me!) from New York, New York, is happy to be back with her person...

  • "My boyfriend and I have been long-distance across seas for four months now, and last week he flew all the way across the Atlantic to come see me! He's never been to New York City before, so we've been spending the week exploring and just having the best time together. I'm so happy to be back by his side and cherishing every second of our visit ❤️."
