👏🔦 The Sweet Spotlight | | ✈️ Fly for the culture | Images: Fly for the Culture | When Courtland Savage finally achieved his dream of becoming a pilot, he couldn't help but notice the lack of diversity in his industry.
- "I was one of the two African-Americans in the entire squadron," Courtland recalled of his time as a pilot in the US Navy.
🤔 Making solutions... Courtland hoped to see other young people of color chase their dreams into the sky. Upon leaving the Navy and getting a job as a commercial pilot, he launched a Charlotte, North Carolina-based nonprofit called Fly For The Culture.
- "I wanted to just showcase other African Americans that are pilots so other young people could see someone that they look like in order to potentially be inspired to pursue a career in the aviation industry," Courtland said.
|
|
| Fly for the Culture has gone on to introduce countless young people to the aviation industry. According to its website, the organization takes students on introductory flights for free "to show them what being a pilot is really like."
- Upon completion, Courtland's students are given support and direction to help them take their next steps in becoming pilots or pursue other professions within the aviation field.
☁️ Reach for the sky... Courland hopes his career path inspires young people like him to chase their dreams.
- "I'm a part of the young generation, also a person of color," he said. "So sometimes I believe with young people, you gotta see it to believe it."

📸 Pic of the Week | | 👟 Shaq gives shoes | Images: YouTube | GoFundMe | "I’m a single mother of my gentle giant – 6’5’’, 380 lb – son," reads a GoFundMe page that was published in February.
The backstory: Tamika, a single mom, was in desperate need of shoes for her son Jor'el Bolden, who had grown out of typical shoe sizes.
- The 16-year-old is a size 23 (typical shoe sizes stop at size 22), and custom shoes to fit him are priced at around $1,500.
🦸 Shaq to the rescue: As donations came pouring into the GoFundMe page, NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal found Jor'el's story and personally sent him three boxes filled with new shoes, new clothes, and even some items from his own closet. The GoFundMe money will now be used to eventually buy Jor'el size 24s once he grows out of the ones Shaq sent.

🍩 DONUT Holes | | ⚽️ Age is just a number... 90-year-old Mike Fisher played soccer on multiple amateur UK teams for over three decades. The passionate athlete took up the sport again at 82 years old, and has spent the last eight years falling back in love with the game.
😋 Nothing like grandma's cooking... The “Nonnas of the World” project showcases cooking around the world by those who often do it best: grandmas. Enoteca Maria in Staten Island, New York, is one successful example of the project, with more than 100 grandmas passing through its doors to cook since it was opened in 2007.
❤️ Self-care is the best care... Check out this sweet self-care visual by pep-talk extraordinaire Alethea Crimmins. If you don't already follow her for a boost of daily positivity, I highly recommend it. "Now go be great in their face and have a good day on purpose!"

😇 Mindfulness Moments | | Writing is like chicken soup – good for the soul | Image: Giphy | Regularly journaling can have some amazing effects on our minds and body.
So, let's reflect on the good in our lives for a few moments. Grab a pen and paper (or the Notes app on your phone), and prepare to enter the amazing mystical castle that is your mind🏰🥰.
- Write a letter to yourself from five years ago. What have you done since then? Where do you still want to go? What are you proud of?
- Describe your perfect day. How can you invite some of those things into your day-to-day now?
- Name three things you are especially grateful for and why.

❤️ Len L. from Moline, Illinois, found her bestie for the restie...
- "I have just returned home from a long weekend with a remote coworker turned close friend! I met my pal while we were working in the same company almost 2 years ago. Last week, I finally got to throw my arms around my friend & LAUGH for days. What a wonderful time we had. Thanks for sharing in our joy 🤩."
💻 Catherine B. from Humboldt, Tennessee, is grateful for her audience...
- "I never imagined that as a grandma, I would have a YouTube channel. The fact that my viewership is up over 500% in the last 90 days tickles me pink. I am meeting fabulous people from all over the world! So grateful for the skills I learned during the pandemic. Lemons into lemonade for sure!"
🙏 Elizabeth C. from McKinney, Texas, is thankful for her son's health...
- "About six weeks ago, my son had a major seizure. We've spent the last month and a half having tests done and meeting with a neurologist. On Friday, we got the news that all tests came back as normal! While we don't know what caused the initial seizure, there is nothing to indicate that there is anything wrong with him or that he'll have another one. It's such a relief to know that his brain is healthy and normal (although his older brother seriously disputes the 'normal' part)."
🐴 Snow S. from Edwards, Colorado, is making her lifelong dreams come true...
- "I have been riding horses since I was 10 years old. (I'm 16 now.) They got me through some of the hardest times of my life, and have been one of the most important aspects of my mental health. For years, I have wanted to finally form that special connection with my heart horse. About a year ago, I found him. I have been taking riding lessons on Mango for a while now, and recently, he became the first horse I have ever owned myself! He is a sweet horse who was misunderstood and in need of someone to love him and someone to love, and I was lonely misfit looking for a connection. In a way, it feels like we saved each other! I love you Mango Muffin!!!"👇
