๐Ÿชš A story about chainsaws

โœˆ๏ธ Let's take a trip to Borneo, a Southeastern Asian island ~3x the size of the UK that was once covered in lush, tropical rainforests. The land is home to the critically endangered orangutan, as well as valuable carbon stores.

But the forests are quickly disappearing due to illegal logging, which has resulted in Borneo losing half its forest cover since the 1930s. Living in poverty and with little access to proper healthcare and basic needs, many Borneo residents have turned to selling illegal lumber for excess funds. But these actions โ€“ while necessary for survival โ€“ are hurting the planet, and putting orangutans in danger.

That's where the non profit, Health in Harmony (HIH), comes in. The company started a chainsaw buyback program in 2017, where they ask farmers to hand in their chainsaws in return for money and a chance to set up an alternative livelihood.

  • In the eight years since its founding, the initiative has helped residents open small businesses, become organic farmers, and even learn unique trades such as beekeeping.

It's a win-win. On top of the cash and career guidance, HIH also provides residents who turn in their saws with access to affordable healthcare.

  • HIH's healthcare clinic allows residents to pay by whatever means they see fit โ€“ whether cash, seedlings, manure, rice husk, or some other resource they have on hand.
  • The medical center also offers discounts to villages that show they have reduced their illegal logging overall.

๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ“ˆ Bottom line: In 2020, researchers from Stanford University analyzed the impact of the clinic and the accompanying conservation, education, and alternative livelihood programs. They discovered deforestation had fallen by 70% in the 10 years after HIH opened โ€“ equivalent to protecting more than 27.4 square kilometers (10.6 square miles) of rainforest.

2.34 billion ton discovery in Wyoming could unlock AI wealth

Over 2.34 billion metric tons of some of the rarest materials on Earth were recently found in a mining operation in rural Wyoming, and it might change the world as we know it.

Experts believe this could result in a mining frenzy that hasnโ€™t been seen since the California Gold Rushโ€ฆand catapult technological advancements to unseen heights, ushering in a potential $80 trillion opportunity.

  • Basically, for AI to continue its insane trajectory, we need massive amounts of rare earth material. And this discovery makes it clear AI has tons of room to grow.

๐Ÿค” So, how do YOU capitalize? The Motley Fool has prepared a one-of-a-kind dossier for what they believe is the best way to invest in this tech. It contains 6 stocks they predict are front and center in this opportunity, including one company youโ€™ve probably never even heard of before.

๐Ÿฑ He's all ears

Meet Audio, a kitten who arrived at True Rescue animal shelter in Mount Juliet, Tennesee, two weeks ago.

๐Ÿ‘‚ The name is fitting for the super-hearing cat. Audio was brought to the shelter abandoned in a box with his three siblings, and rescuers first thought he had some sort of ear infection. Upon closer inspection, however, they realized he actually had four ears โ€“ two normal ones and two smaller ones growing backwards inside the others.

  • The additional ears shouldn't pose any health concerns as Audio grows up. The rescue said the kitten is around eight weeks old, weighs 2 lbs, and is "simply ear-resistible."

๐Ÿฅ‡ Bringing home the gold... When gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo claimed the Olympic gold medal for his floor routine, he became the first Filipino man to win an Olympic gold medal, the first Filipino to win any medal in gymnastics, and the second Filipino to ever win a gold medal. In addition to his two golds (he also won in vault), the Olympian was awarded a new house by the Filipino government for his accomplishments.

๐Ÿฅฆ Groceries with dignity... Brad Paisley and his wife Kimberley helped open "The Store" in March 2020, a free supermarket that allows low-income customers to have access to quality food with dignity. They've since helped thousands of residents in their flagship store, and Paisley announced earlier this year that a second location is in the works.

๐Ÿข There's a tortoise on the loose... A well-traveled tortoise recently made it three miles from his home before being caught trying to cross a busy interstate in Arizona. The tortoise, lovingly named Stitch, escaped through a small hole in the fence before being found by state troopers. "I was surprised he had gone as far as he did," said the hare his owner after he returned home.

All of that sucked. A lot. And then we had a pandemic. But, five years later, Iโ€™m still here.ย Iโ€™m cancer free, my career is going well, my kids are doing wellโ€ฆ Ultimately, things turned out way better than they otherwise could have.
