🗣🌐 Dose of Discussion: A 360° Look at a Hot-Button Issue | | The father of the Georgia school shooter was charged with murder | Image: Elijah Nouvelage/Reuters | Last week, the father of the 14-year-old Apalachee High School shooting suspect was arrested in connection with the Georgia attack that left four dead, in a case that pushes the legal limits of parental responsibility for a child’s alleged gun crime. The details: The arrest warrant accuses the father of causing the deaths of others “by providing a firearm to [his son] with knowledge that he was a threat to himself and others.” Officials say a key part of the case stems from an interaction the father and his son had with law enforcement more than a year prior to last week’s mass shooting. - In May 2023, the FBI alerted local police to online threats about a school shooting associated with an email address linked to the then-13-year-old suspect.
- A sheriff's deputy went to interview the boy – who denied making the threats – as well as his father. According to an FBI statement, the father told police he had guns in the house, but his son didn’t have unsupervised access to them.
- Seven months later, the suspect’s father purchased the AR-15-style rifle that was allegedly used in the mass shooting as a holiday present for his son, according to multiple reports citing law enforcement sources.
Why it’s a big deal: The case marks the second time in US history that a parent has been charged in connection with a mass shooting by a minor, after the parents of the 16-year-old who carried out a 2021 school shooting in Oxford, Michigan, were each convicted and sentenced to 10+ years in prison earlier this year. - It also features the most serious charges levied in such a case: two counts of second-degree murder, four counts of involuntary manslaughter, and eight counts of cruelty to children. Altogether, they carry a prison sentence of up to 180 years.
Looking ahead… The Apalachee High School shooting suspect and his father are both scheduled to appear in court for separate preliminary hearings in early December. 📊 Flash poll: In your opinion, should parents be held legally responsible for gun crimes carried out by their children? |

⏱💥 Speed Rounds: Quick, Impactful Stories | | Our Monday morning stroll around the world | Image: FSGC/Pierini | 🇸🇲 San Marino hired Ted Lasso. San Marino, a country nestled inside Italy with a population of ~33,000, defeated Liechtenstein by a score of 1-0 in an official competitive match last Thursday to earn its first-ever competitive win in men’s international soccer. Prior to the victory, the San Marino men’s soccer team had an overall competitive record of 0-171-5 since they first began competing on the global stage in 1990. 🇨🇳 China is ending foreign adoptions of its children by non-relatives. Since 1992, international families have adopted 160,000+ Chinese children, with just over half being placed with US families. Over the years, the international adoption program became a means for Chinese families to evade punishment for violating Beijing’s one-child policy, which was scrapped in 2015. China’s recent decision to halt foreign adoptions comes as the country faces a declining birth rate and rapidly aging population. 🇪🇸 Venezuela’s opposition leader was granted political asylum in Spain. Venezuelan presidential candidate Edmundo González fled to Spain yesterday in response to an arrest warrant from Venezuelan authorities accusing him of terrorism, conspiracy, and other crimes related to July’s disputed presidential election. Incumbent Nicolás Maduro was declared the winner of the election by local officials, despite the main opposition party and some Western nations – including the US – claiming González won the presidency. |

OnlyFans creators earned ~$5.3 billion last year | Image: OnlyFans | If newly released figures are any indication, OnlyFans Dad is raking in the cash. Users spent $6.6 billion on OnlyFans last year, according to a UK regulatory filing published Thursday. The platform’s creators are entitled to 80% (OnlyFans takes the rest), meaning they pocketed ~$5.3 billion, an ~18% increase from 2022. A breakdown: With 4.1 million creators on the platform, that works out to average earnings of $1,300/creator. But in reality, a majority of the payouts goes to a limited number of accounts. Bhad Bhabie, for instance, reportedly makes ~$34 million/year from OnlyFans (how bout dat?). - Another creator fun-fact: 1 out of every 1,470 people living in Connecticut makes OF content, the highest per capita rate in the country.
Zoom out: OF creators’ bank accounts aren’t the only things going up (mind out of the gutter). The company’s profit and user growth also increased year over year. OnlyFans generated a pretax profit of $658 million in 2023, a 25% increase over 2022. As for users, 305 million people had “Fan” accounts on the platform as of November 30, 2023, a 28% increase from the year prior. 👀 Looking ahead… The latest results come as OnlyFans is being investigated over whether it is doing enough to prevent underage users from accessing porn through its site. The platform synonymous with porn is also focused on non-porn related growth, and has been building up its stable of comedians, chefs, personal trainers, and other types of creators. |

💬 Overheard | | Image: NSA | “[It] just might surprise you!” In a surprising turn of events, the NSA is allowing Americans to listen in on them for a change. Last Thursday, the agency published the first two episodes of its inaugural podcast, called No Such Podcast – a play on the agency’s nickname, No Such Agency, from back when its existence was still a secret. - The NSA says its new show will feature declassified stories from agency experts, with a goal of highlighting the expertise of employees who represent “the world’s best codemakers and codebreakers.”
- The pilot episode includes a declassified story of the NSA’s contributions to the takedown of Osama bin Laden following the September 11 terrorist attacks, along with interviews from leaders on cybersecurity, AI, advanced research, and more.
👀 Looking ahead… No Such Podcast will publish one episode per week through mid-October. |

🤗 Daily Dose of Positive | | 🔍 Taboo's treasures | Image: Good News Network | Taboo doesn't need a burglar's mask for her daily crimes – though the UK kitty has become somewhat of a local celebrity for her sneaky thievery. Taboo's owner, Sandra Danskin, constantly comes home to stolen items left by her sneaky 12-year-old tuxedo cat, and often posts them on Facebook so people can claim their things. - Taboo even has a specialized cat-call to signal when she's completed a new burglary: “Whenever she gets something, she sits outside and makes this high-pitched whining noise to let me know,” said Sanda told SWNS. “I’ve tried talking to her about it but she doesn’t change her ways. Underwear, socks, shoes… she just keeps bringing them.”
- Thankfully, the neighbors have a good sense of humor about it, and Taboo is well loved around town.
