β¨ Mantra of the Week β¨ | | Everything is working for my good. I trust what is meant to be will be. |

ππ¦ The Sweet Spotlight | | How kindness = good karma | Images: Ashley Hall | Last year, Sebbie Hall was honored with an award I think everyone at Positive DONUT would agree is one of the best you can get: The Kindest Man in his country. The 21-year-old believes kindness is his "superpower," and has carried out an act of kindness every day for over four years. - His daily acts of kindness started during the Covid pandemic, but Sebbie has continued the tradition ever since. A statue of the young man wearing a superhero cape was unveiled in his honor at Tower Hill in London last November.
Not all sunshine and rainbows... Sebbie has a rare chromosome anomaly that causes him to have a wide range of physical and communication difficulties. He never lets it get in his way however, and thanks to his mom, is always able to complete his acts of kindness. - Sebbieβs mom, Ashley, runs the Sebbie Hall Kindness foundation in his honor, and has raised more than $130,000 for disadvantaged people in Staffordshire.
And if that's not inspiring enough for those with a discerning Positive palate, the story gets better. |
|
| Sebbieβs community was distraught when the original venue holding his statue no longer had the means to keep it on their grounds. And after transporting the statue to a temporary art exhibit, which also announced they could no longer keep it, Sebbie's statue was at risk of being melted down for scrap metal and recycled. The town of Lichfield did everything it could to save the statue (they eventually succeeded). And when two contractors who were hired to move the 240-pound sculpture to a temporary storehouse couldnβt lift it, more than a dozen strangers even rallied to get the sculpture safely to its new home. βIt was heartwarming to hear how the people of Lichfield pulled together to save the Sebbie statue, which means so much to Sebbie and his family,β Oliver Chapman, an entrepreneur who helped orchestrate the relocation of the sculpture, told Metro. βThe statue acts as a beacon of hope for all disabled young people worldwide and needs to be preserved.β π Looking ahead... Oliver and the Sebbie Hall Kindness Foundation are currently on the hunt for the statue's new (and hopefully permanent) home. |

πΈ Pic of the Week | | If you can dream it, you can do it | Image: NBC | The Paralympic Games may have ended this past weekend, but I don't think I'll ever be over the talent of the amazing athletes who took part in the competition. πΉ Among them is 17-year-old Sheetal Devi, one of the "armless archers" who took home a medal in this year's games (also among them is American Matt Stutzman, who took home gold). - Sheetal won bronze in the mixed team compound open competition, becoming the first female archer without arms to medal at the Paralympic Games. What's even more impressive is the teen only started practicing archery three years ago, thanks to a youth event organized by the Indian Army.

π© DONUT Holes | | π§ͺ Not kid-ding... Heman Bekele received his first chemistry kit when he was seven. The chemistry-obsessed teen just won Time's Kid of the Year award for his work towards skin cancer research. His most recent project consists of developing a bar of soap that can treat and prevent skin cancer in a simple and inexpensive way. π Theater is for everyone... While audio descriptions and closed captioning are common for film and television, live theater has notoriously been inaccessible to blind or hard-of-hearing individuals. Gravity Access, a project introducing sensory and descriptive experiences to live performances, is aiming to turn that on its head. π«Ά Just because it's cute... Check out this video of a little girl feeling true power for the first time (and get ready for a little giggle). |

π What's Your Win? | | π°οΈ The time traveler | Now I love hearing and writing about all of the good news happening around the world, but thereβs something extra special about sharing the positive stories happening right here in our DONUT community. Big or small, thereβs always something for which to be grateful. We didnβt receive any new submissions this week (cue tiny violin ππ»), so Iβm featuring some of the archived wins from September 2023. Check them out: π Amelia P. from Denver, Colorado, is ready to take center stage... - "I recently just got the lead in my schoolβs play, The Curious Savage which Iβve been working towards for years. The cast is great and Iβm so over the moon to be in it! I love my character; sheβs so funny and sweet. The play is seriously incredible and Iβm so grateful for this opportunity!"
β€οΈ Steve C. from Fresno, California, is appreciative of his amazing wife... - "Ten years ago I asked the angel of my dreams to marry me. Luckily, she said yes and truly committed to "in sickness or in health". Six months later I was diagnosed with stage four cancer and began the treatment nightmare (chemo and radiation). I lost fifty pounds within a few months and gradually lost my ability to walk and talk. But my wife was there by my side, giving me the strength and will to fight. I'm still in that battle but now I'm on immunotherapy, which is much less damaging to the human body. My strength and energy have gradually returned and we've begun to travel again. If it all works out, we hope to be in Europe next year. I believe that angels really do walk among us. God sent one to save my life and I will cherish her for eternity."

π Submit a Win | | β¬οΈ Real footage of me reading all your wins every week |
| I get it: life can get busy and overwhelming. It's hard to see the bright side sometimes. - But What's Your Win isn't about toxic positivity β it's about perspective and expectations (which some, like our CEO, say is the secret to happiness). There truly is always something to be grateful for, even if it's as simple as your favorite cozy blanket or a fantastic latte you had earlier today.
What's Your Win is about taking a moment to remember the good things in life. Big or small, it's all worth celebrating. And who knows? Sharing your win might inspire someone else to recognize the good in theirsπ₯°. Share your everyday wins and gratitude here for a chance to be featured in next week's newsletter and have a positive impact on a stranger's life. Submit a win β or a friend/partner/family member's win β here. |
