| | “Kindness” was recently chosen as the Oxford Children’s 2024 Word of the Year. More than 6,000 children voted on what word they thought best summed up last year, with "kindness" winning with a 61% majority. When asked about their vote, one kiddo said: “Everyone you meet is fighting a battle we know nothing about. We should treat everyone with kindness. You never truly know how much it could help someone.” 🥹 This whole story has me feeling a bit like this: Have a fantastic day and rest of your week, and don’t forget to be kind! –Kailyn P.S. Don’t forget, we have our huge “Picture This” giveaway going on right now, with a grand prize of $1,000 and a $1,500 Scott Kemper Imagery gift card up for grabs. Enter the giveaway for free here🕺. 👏🔦 The Sweet Spotlight | | The story of one piano's second chance | Images: Josiah Jackson | Three years ago, pianist Josiah Jackson had a flight connection through Chicago’s O'Hare International Airport when he spotted a baby grand in desperate need of repair. The piano was open to the public to play, but not the most pleasant to listen to: “It was absolutely the worst piano I have ever played,” said Jackson, 18 at the time. “It was embarrassingly bad – the keys were sticky and every note sounded terrible.” Thankfully, Josiah had recently opened a piano tuning business near his home in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He had to run to catch his plane that day, but vowed to himself that he would get back to Chicago eventually to tune the instrument for free. Last year, he finally got his chance. |
|
| As Josiah's church group began planning their summer trip to Guatemala last summer, he noticed they were going to have a layover in Chicago. His time to shine was finally here🙌. Josiah called the airport in advance to ensure the piano was still there, and to inquire about getting the equipment he needed for the day to work on it. It was indeed in the same spot where he had left it three years ago, but the piano had since been roped off to the public – deemed unplayable by airport employees. Josiah welcomed the challenge, and arranged with the airport to tune the piano during his eight-hour layover. - “It was in very rough shape,” he shared with the Washington Post. “Dust was everywhere, and there was a gluey substance under the keys that prevented them from working. I’d never seen anything like it.”
🎹 It took him seven hours, but Josiah had the piano freshly tuned and good as new before running to catch his next flight. Months later, he’s just grateful the instrument will get a second life. “I’m thrilled that people are playing the piano again,” he told WaPo. “Piano tuners are becoming more and more rare, and I’m one of the few people who could fix it. It was just a cool community thing to do.” |

📸 Pic of the Week | | Here comes the sun...fish | Image: CNN | 🐠 How do you cheer up a lonely fish? Employees at the Kaikyokan Aquarium in Shimonoseki, Japan, were faced with this tricky question earlier this month, after their sunfish became sick and depressed when the aquarium closed for renovations. After trying many things to remedy the fish, one employee took a long shot and suggested that maybe the fish was simply lonely. Turns out, they were completely right. Cardboard cutouts of people’s faces with aquarium uniforms were placed by the glass – and the sunfish perked up overnight and began eating again. All he needed was a little company❤️. |

🍩 DONUT Holes | | 🏳️🌈 Hundreds of couples tied the knot last week in Thailand after same-sex marriage was passed nationwide. LGBTQ+ couples in Thailand have fought for the same rights as heterosexual couples for more than a decade. 🛁 Archaeologists have made a "once-in-a-century" find in Pompeii, uncovering an ornate bathhouse buried under the ground for ~2,000 years. ♟️ Tanitoluwa “Tani” Adewumi has won multiple national and international chess championships and is well on his way to becoming a grandmaster. Oh, and he’s only 13. Even more impressive? Tani and his family are refugees from Nigeria and were living in a homeless shelter when he won his first New York State championship. |

😇 Mindfulness Moments | | 📔 2025 = the year of junk journaling | Junk journaling has exploded in popularity in recent years, with journalers taking to social media to share their impressive “junk” creations. How does it work? It's simple. Junk journaling takes everyday scraps the some might consider waste (think: receipts, ticket stubs, brochures, etc.), and transforms them into a unique keepsake somewhere between a collage and scrapbook. The practice is meditative for the mind and good for our environment. Read all about junk journaling here. |
