๐๐ฆ The Sweet Spotlight | | Helping blind eyes turn the page | Images: Living Pictures | For more than twenty years, 88-year-old Len Webb has volunteered his artistic talents to help recreate childrenโs books for the blind and visually impaired. Len is part of the team at Living Paintings, a 100% volunteer-run organization that reimagines classic childrenโs books with 3D-images. Their mission allows children who canโt see traditional illustrations to still have a chance to let their imaginations run wild. Creating a Living Paintings book is quite the process. It begins with volunteers like Len, who sculpt and chisel clay designs that match the illustrations in whatever book they are working on. Once perfected, the tactile images are reproduced with a Thermopress machine that creates molds and presses the shapes into heated plastic. Each book gets around 35 copies made at a time. After the molds are printed, the tiny sculptures are then sent on to be painted in bright and vibrant colors for the little readers. A majority of blind and visually impaired people can still see slight colors and shades, and Living Paintings hopes their painted molds help the young readers experience the story even more. - After painting, the pieces are carefully secured to each book and registered as part of Living Painting's free library.
- Audio guides are also recorded for each title so the reader can have a fully immersive and sensory experience.
|
| Images: Positive News | The whole process of bringing a book to life, from gaining the publisherโs permission to ending up on the library shelves, takes around six months. All of the work put into each title allows blind and visually impaired kids to be, well, kids โ enjoying lively illustrations and visuals rather than only hearing the words on the page. ๐ Check it out if you're across the pond: The companyโs website serves as an online library, where parents or anyone in the UK seeking to experience the books can borrow them completely free of charge. |

๐ธ Pic of the Week | | Sweet redemption | Image: Tails of Hope Dog Rescue | Meet Simone๐, a seven-month-old pit bull pup who spends her days playing and cuddling with school students in her role as the official therapy dog of University Middle School in Memphis. Her story started bleakly...Simone and her two brothers were found last summer after quite literally being dumped in the trash and abandoned in a cage for days. Each pup was covered with mange, malnourished, and each with eye infections and sores, but Tails of Hope Dog Rescue helped nurse them back to health in the months that followed. But ended happily: Simone has since been adopted by Sally Parish, the Superintendent of University Schools, who has trained her as a certified therapy dog to work every day in the middle school. Simone provides all the cuddles and self-soothing the kids may need, and is rewarded with pets and love for life๐ฅฐ. |

๐ฉ DONUT Holes | | ๐ฆฎ Thousands of Golden Retrievers and their owners congregated in Golden, Colorado, last weekend for the sixth-annual Goldens in Golden event. Yes, it's just as cute as it sounds (and benefits local small businesses!). See the day in action here. ๐ฎ๐ฝ18-year-old Eagle Scout Jimmy Poirier just officially joined a less-than-1%-club by achieving all 139 merit badges available to Boy Scouts."It took a lot of work, determination and dedication," Jimmy told WZB-TV of the feat, which took him 1,000+ hours to complete. "It means a lot to me and it means a lot to scouting." ๐งธ The Pittsburgh International Airport team posted a desperate plea on social media last week after finding a poor lost stuffed bunny at baggage claim. It turned into an adventure: The stuffy was given a VIP tour of the airport, and staff were able to successfully track down its owner โ a 6-year-old named Waylynn โ to send the bunny safely home. |

๐ Mindfulness Moments | | โ๏ธ There's no right way to write | If youโve been around for a while, you know Iโm a big fan of journaling. The simple practice of setting aside some time to write out your thoughts and feelings can have some pretty amazing benefits for both our bodies and minds. However, if youโre like me, sometimes it's difficult to even know where to start. If you need some journaling inspo, try jotting down some thoughts on one or two of the prompts below. There are no rules when it comes to journaling โ just let the thoughts flow however it feels right! ๐ Todayโs prompts: - What am I most proud of from the last week?
- What is a fear I have recently had to overcome? How did that feel?
- When was the last time I felt truly rested? How can I incorporate more peace into my day-to-day?
- What is a limiting belief about myself or others that Iโm ready to release?
- Whatโs one memory from the past week-or-so that I really want to remember and share?

| ๐๐๏ธ Virginia K. from Maine has so much to be proud ofโฆ - "My husband and I are celebrating 44 years of marriage, 30 of which we lived and worked together in our small business . . . First a resort hotel in the Caribbean, then a bed and breakfast in a ski town in New Hampshire. We worked hard, many times 12 to 16 hours per day, seven days a week. But we are now retired on 50 acres in Maine, in a beautiful home that we designed and built and an amazing view looking at the White Mountains. We have two beautiful children, two fantastic in-law children, and four healthy and happy grandchildren. Weโre very lucky!"
โค๏ธ One anonymous subscriber from Pennsylvania is taking steps to better their mental healthโฆ. - "Iโm starting my first legitimate step toward bettering my mental state. Iโve suffered with anxiety and depression for awhile, and tried ways of doing it on my own, but Iโm starting counseling today. It will hopefully give me a better outlet to recovering my self esteem and love for myself so I can spread love and Godโs word to everyone around me. But, it starts with learning to love myself again."
๐โโ๏ธ Bren L. from Moore, Oklahoma, is cutting her hair and helping othersโฆ - "I have been growing my hair out for over two years and this last weekend, I was finally able to donate! Ever since a dear friend went through chemo and lost her hair, I have wanted to donate my own hair. This last weekend was the second time I have been able to and it is so exciting to know someone gets to feel more themselves while going through a really rough situation."
๐ฐ๏ธ Claire N. from Michigan is a blessing to her studentsโฆ - "I'm an English teacher. I began my career teaching middle school and have been moved up to high school the last few years. My last year teaching 7th grade was 2019-2020 (the shutdown year). I taught an elective course where the final assignment was for students to create time capsules including a letter to their 'about to graduate high school' selves. Those 7th graders are now seniors who just began their last semester of high school. I delivered their time capsules this week and their responses were better than ever expected. Some students were surprised I'd actually saved them. Some students laughed at their middle-school selves. Some were surprised by how different their friends, goals, interests were. All feedback was positive. So much so that I had students coming to me asking for their time capsules even if I didn't have them in class.
- It was the exact thing I needed coming back from the winter break. I currently teach 9th grade English and have decided to incorporate the time capsule idea into my curriculum so that I can continue the excitement each year."
