⏱💥 Speed Rounds: Quick, Impactful Stories | | America’s trade war has officially gone global | Image: AFP/Getty | President Trump’s 25% tariff on all global steel and aluminum imports went into effect yesterday, in a move that prompted immediate trade retaliation by Canada and the EU. Or in other words, the global trade war is going pedal to the metal. In response to the move: - Canada imposed reciprocal 25% tariffs on ~$21 billion worth of US steel, aluminum, and other goods like computers, sports equipment, and cast iron products.
- The EU announced future counter-tariffs on ~$24.5 billion worth of well-known American products, including Kentucky bourbon, Harley-Davidson motorcycles, peanut butter, and blue jeans.
The impact: America’s auto industry in particular is expected to feel the effects of Trump’s global tariffs on steel and aluminum, which together account for 50+% of all materials that go into cars. The new duties – paid by US businesses importing the goods – are projected to raise average manufacturing costs by ~$400/vehicle, with the majority passed on to American consumers. - Home appliances, medical devices, cans, machinery, and infrastructure are other commonly used products that could see price increases following the new US tariffs.
Tariffs could keep escalating – or potentially be reversed. Trump yesterday pledged to impose additional tariffs on the EU if the bloc follows through with its plan to enact counter-tariffs (which begins April 1). Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says the EU remains open to making a deal with the US, and would reverse its retaliatory tariffs if such an agreement were reached. 📅👀 Looking further ahead…Trump’s recent exemptions from tariffs on Canada and Mexico are set to expire April 2 – the same date Trump has promised to impose new reciprocal tariffs, which involve responding to any duties on US exports by enacting identical tariffs on the other country (involving the same products and same rates). |

The world’s largest 3D-printed housing community was just completed | Image: Diana Olick/CNBC | In 2022, Lennar, the nation’s second-largest homebuilder, partnered with Icon, a 3D technology company, to build 100 3D-printed homes in Georgetown, Texas, a city ~30 miles north of DONUT HQ in Austin. This development was recently completed, making it the world’s largest 3D-printed community, CNBC reports. ~75% of the homes – 2- and 3-bedroom models starting at ~$400,000 – have already been sold, per the companies. The process, the process, the processWhile foundations, roofing, and finishes were built and installed traditionally, the walls of each house were constructed by Icon's Vulcan 3D printer, a 45-foot behemoth weighing nearly five tons that takes in raw concrete and spits out a corduroy-looking finished product with no right angles. - The Georgetown project started off using two Icon printers. By the second year, the development was using 11 machines and churning out two homes per week.
- Each printer operates 24 hours/day, and does the job of more than a dozen construction workers.
Up next: The two companies are now working to build a 200-home community, also in Texas. 📸 Big picture: 3D printing has been hailed as a cheaper, faster, less resource-intensive way to build, with proponents hoping it can help chip away at America’s affordable housing shortage – and also more easily erect structures a little further from home. NASA in 2022 awarded ICON a $57 million contract to develop 3D-printing tech to build roads, launchpads, and homes on the Moon’s surface. |

Younger Americans are experiencing trend fatigue | Image: Emily Grace/YouTube | From “cottagecore” to “mob wife aesthetic,” the fashion trend cycle in recent years has been a whirlwind to keep up with. And many younger Americans are getting tired of it, according to a new NY Times report. Fast fashionThe turnaround rate for fashion trends has sped up significantly in recent years, with experts mostly attributing the trend to three major factors: - Social media’s constant need for novelty to hold our attention, and algorithms able to elevate the unknown to ubiquity in a matter of days.
- The rise of fast-fashion marketplaces, which can quickly meet demand generated online.
- The spread of online click-to-buy features, making it easier than ever to transition from scrolling social media to buying a product.
There are some negative impacts. In addition to placing more strain on consumers’ wallets, analysts say these quick-changing trends also harm the environment. The average number of times a single garment is worn has decreased by 36% over the past 15 years. And for every five garments produced today, three end up in a landfill or incinerated, costing consumers ~$460 billion/year in clothes they could keep wearing. 📸 Big picture: The textile industry is currently responsible for ~10% of global CO2 emissions – and its carbon footprint is expected to go up-and-to-the-right. Emissions from textile manufacturing alone are projected to increase 60% by 2030, according to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. |
