๐๐ฆ The Sweet Spotlight | | ๐ฌ A linguistic master(of)class | Images: Yuji Beleza | Yuji Beleza grew up in Kyoto, Japan, raised by an Irish mother who taught English and spoke four languagesโEnglish, Irish, Japanese, and Spanishโand a Japanese father who worked as a security guard. From the get-go, Yuji wasnโt quite sure where he belonged. And to make matters worse, the kids at school often teased him for being the only student of mixed race, even though he spoke fluent Japanese. One thing he was grateful for, however, is the appreciation for other cultures that his family instilled: - โMy sister and I learned early on how to switch between languages,โ he told CNN. โAnd I think I had a pretty broad perspective from a young age because I was always curious and eager to learn about the world.โ
To the other side of the world: As he got older, Yuji grew curious about his Irish roots and spent some time living in Irelandโwhere he still wasnโt completely accepted due to his Japanese heritage. After gravitating to the immigrant community, he realized that in order to make lasting friendships and connections, he would need to know more than English and Japanese. And thus, his love for languages was born. |
|
| Skipping past the tireless toil...Yuji now speaks at least a part of 27 different languages. - He can speak Japanese, English, Russian, German, and Turkish fluenty.
- Heโs also conversational in about 10 more, and can greet people in dozens more.
His entire career now centers around languages. Yuji creates quick, spontaneous interviews in dozens of languages and posts them on his social mediaโwhere heโs amassed millions of followers. Bottom line: โI want people to see that language isnโt just grammar and vocabularyโitโs about recognition, empathy, and joy,โ he told CNN. โLanguage can divide us, but it also brings us together. And if I can make just one person feel a little more visible, a little more valuedโthatโs everything.โ |

๐ธ Pic of the Week | | ๐ป Believe it or not, thereโs only one actual bear in this picture | Image: San Diego Humane Society | When an orphaned baby black bear came into the San Diego Humane Society last month, employees had to get creative to make sure the baby didnโt bond too much with humans. The fix: Donning bear costumes and masks while tending to the cub. This will continue for a decent period of time; the group plans on watching after the cub for up to a year, with the intention of returning it to the wild once it's old and strong enough. So far, so good. The two month old cub is stable, playful, and thriving, according to the humane society branch. |

๐ฉ DONUT Holes | | ๐ฅ A blood test to help diagnose Alzheimerโs disease has been given marketing clearance by the US Food and Drug Administration. It's the first to get signoff to aid in the early detection of the disease in the US. ๐๏ธ When Alison Anne found a vintage locket hidden among shelves in a thrift store, she made it her mission to find the couple in the necklaceโs photographs. She took to social media to help her search and finally got a message from Kelly Brown, who instantly recognized the couple as her grandparents in the 1940s. ๐ A group of husbands have started calling their bros for a quick goodnight chat, and their wives canโt get enough of it.
