ππ¦ The Sweet Spotlight | | The story of one piano's second chance | Images: Josiah Jackson | Three years ago, pianist Josiah Jackson had a flight connection through Chicagoβs O'Hare International Airport when he spotted a baby grand in desperate need of repair. The piano was open to the public to play, but not the most pleasant to listen to: βIt was absolutely the worst piano I have ever played,β said Jackson, 18 at the time. βIt was embarrassingly badβthe keys were sticky and every note sounded terrible.β Thankfully, Josiah had recently opened a piano tuning business near his home in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He had to run to catch his plane that day, but vowed to himself that he would get back to Chicago eventually to tune the instrument for free. Last year, he finally got his chance. |
|
| As Josiah's church group began planning their summer trip to Guatemala last summer, he noticed they were going to have a layover in Chicago. His time to shine was finally hereπ. Josiah called the airport in advance to ensure the piano was still there, and to inquire about getting the equipment he needed for the day to work on it. It was indeed in the same spot where he had left it three years ago, but the piano had since been roped off to the publicβdeemed unplayable by airport employees. Josiah welcomed the challenge, and arranged with the airport to tune the piano during his eight-hour layover. - βIt was in very rough shape,β he shared with the Washington Post. βDust was everywhere, and there was a gluey substance under the keys that prevented them from working. Iβd never seen anything like it.β
πΉ It took him seven hours, but Josiah had the piano freshly tuned and good as new before running to catch his next flight. Months later, heβs just grateful the instrument will get a second life. βIβm thrilled that people are playing the piano again,β he told WaPo. βPiano tuners are becoming more and more rare, and Iβm one of the few people who could fix it. It was just a cool community thing to do.β Note: This story previously appeared in a Feb. 2025 edition. |

π What's Your Win? | | π It's here | Welcome to Whatβs Your Win, the section of the newsletter where we celebrate all of the good news happening right here in the Positive DONUT community. I love sharing stories from around the globe, but thereβs just something extra special about hearing whatβs going on in your lives. Check out the submissions we received this week! π One anonymous subscriber from CO is a shining beacon of positivity... - "I refuse to do social media because I hate all the negativity. My employer recently made me do a Facebook profile. One person per day to let the public get to know all of us better. Lots of snarky comments, lots of dislikes as we donβt exactly work in a very well liked profession. When mine got posted I actually got 65 likes, lots of positive comments, and NOT ONE SINGLE NEGATIVE COMMENT!!!"
π Yvonne L. from the Netherlands just took a HUGE first step forward... - "I just want to celebrate myself for asking for help! I have ADHD and these past months I've been struggling with lots of things. And instead of keeping on as I would always do, I asked for help. So: GO ME! Gosh this feels empowering haha!"
π Bill D. from Solana Beach is one tough stud of an athlete... - "Won my age group by 5 minutes at the Solana Beach Triathlon. This was supposed to be the year I got my knee replacement, after 2 painful years, but after a few cortisone shots, rode my bike more, hiked more, and built up the muscles around the knee. Hanging in there, unbeaten in my 65- 69 Age group this year. Triathlon can be as frustrating as golf, but the community is the big reward."
