Good evening. First, it was Stories—now it’s Maps. Instagram’s innovation streak continued this week, as the social media company unveiled a new feature that lets users share their most recent active location with others and also discover location-based content.

And if that sounds like Snap Map…that’s because it’s basically the same thing. Snap Map is one of Snapchat’s core offerings, and just passed 400 million monthly active users.

In other Instagram news, the company also announced this week that it’s launching reposts (similar to TikTok/X), and rolling out its “Friends” tab globally. The moves are aimed at returning the app to the days where it was a place for you to interact with your friends, something Instagram has moved away from in recent years to prioritize algorithmic-driven video.

📜 August 7: On This Day in History

Bonds away

Image: ESPN

Each of the following events happened on August 7. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) Baseball player Barry Bonds, one of the most dominant hitters of all time, slugs his 756th career bomb (home run), breaking the record set by Hank Aaron. The controversial Bonds still holds the MLB career home run record, but has not been elected to the Hall of Fame largely due to allegations of steroid use.
  • B) At the Olympics in London, track-and-field athlete Fanny Blankers-Koen, pregnant with her third child, helps the Dutch team win the 4 × 100 relay, becoming the first woman to capture four gold medals at a single Games. She previously won the 100m, 200m, and 80m hurdles.
  • C) George Washington orders the creation of the first US military decoration, the Badge of Military Merit, which is today called the Purple Heart.
  • D) 22-year-old homemaker Alice Ramsey and three friends complete the first all-female cross-country road trip. It took them 59 days to drive from New York to San Francisco, battling rough roads and lack of signage the whole way.
