A living room, a legacy, and a lot of jazz

Images: Maggie Penman/The Washington Post

On the 21st of every month, neighbors on Capitol Hill know exactly where to find the beat: David Weiner’s living room.

At 75 years old, Weiner has turned his DC row house into a jazz club of sorts, hosting a monthly jam session that’s equal parts block party, open mic, and community festival.

  • What started as a small gathering of musician friends has grown into a neighborhood traditionβ€”horns spilling out the windows, keyboards tucked between couches, and guests balancing plates of potluck food while keeping time with the drummer.
  • There’s a $21 suggested ticket price to pay the house band, but whether you show up with cash, a shared potluck meal, or empty-handed, everyone is welcome.

Weiner loves to provide a space where people can connect over music without the formalities of a concert hall. And judging by the packed house each month and 1,000 people on his email list for invites, the get-togethers strike the right note.

He has no plans of stopping any time soon. β€œThinking of myself being 85 and doing it seems a little preposterous,” Weiner told the Washington Post. β€œBut at the same time, you know, why not?”

In an era where so much culture is consumed on screens, Weiner’s living room reminds us that some of the best shows aren’t streamedβ€”they’re simply lived.

Love at a snail's pace

Images: Giselle Clarkson

Ned, a rare New Zealand snail, has a problem most of us can relate toβ€”he just wants to find someone to love. Trouble is, his species is so rare that he could possibly be the last of his kind. Ned’s shell spirals to the left rather than the traditional snail spiral to the right, a 1 in ~40,000 occurrence.

Put it on Netflix: New Zealanders are stepping in as the world’s most-determined matchmakers, scouring remote forests in hopes of finding Ned the Perfect Match before it’s too late.

The stakes are high: No mate = even less of a future for the species. But for now, Ned lives in a climate-controlled tank, eating his greens and waiting on a first date that may never come.

πŸ“– Book It Around DC is a new kind of community combining audiobooks and walkingβ€”and proving you don’t always need to be chatting to enjoy someone’s company.

πŸ”Ž Storytime toys go wayyy back: Archaeologists recently discovered the earliest known objects used to tell a story.

πŸ”οΈ Rocky Mountain National Park is getting an upgrade to help disabled visitors to enjoy the landβ€”including new accessible picnic tables, an easily reachable bus to transport visitors across the park, and free all-terrain wheelchairs.

πŸ˜‡ Mindfulness Moments

Believe it, then achieve it

I've been working lately on creating some positive affirmations for myself. Affirmations, when repeated regularly, can greatly impact our lives.

Let's do an exercise together. At the end, you should have your very own positive affirmations, completely personalized to you.

  1. Take a few moments to identify any negative beliefs you may have about yourself (ex: I'm always late to everything).
  2. Write the opposing statement or positive belief (ex: I am always on time).
  3. Make the statement as personal as possible to your specific situation (i.e.: when I have plans with people, I always give myself enough time to get there early and relaxed).

Bottom line: As they say, consistency breeds excellence. Write down your affirmations on sticky notes, then hang them on your bathroom mirror, desk, fridge, etc.β€”basically wherever you'll consistently encounter them.

Keep your affirmations positive, personal, and to the point. Enjoy!!
