📜 July 1: On This Day in History

Each of the following events happened on July 1. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) Cyclists compete in the first-ever Tour de France. The race is run in six mostly flat stages which carry an average distance of 250+ miles, far longer than the modern-day average of 106 miles across 21 stages.
  • B) The first personal stereo cassette player, called the Sony Walkman, debuts for sale. The Walkman came about when Sony’s legendary chairman, Masaru Ibuka, made a special request to have a playback-only listening device made so he could listen to it on trips.
  • C) The first Olympic games hosted by the US kick off in St. Louis. It’s also the first-ever Olympics to introduce the tradition of awarding gold, silver, and bronze medals.
  • D) The United States Postal Service (USPS) introduces the Zone Improvement Plan as part of an effort to improve mail delivery speed. It marks the first use of ZIP codes to facilitate the efficient sorting of mail at a national level.

Hint: ZIP codes are not to be confused with area codes, which contain just 3 numbers

The cost of missing a turning point

Most turning points don’t feel important in the moment. They arrive as routine announcements, policy decisions, or developments that attract little attention. Then the effects begin to spread. Industries change course. Capital moves and new opportunities emerge.

Years later, the significance looks obvious.

Porter & Co.’s newsletter has their research team’s findings for those moments before the broader public connects the dots. Their analysts study the forces shaping the economy and identify the developments that could carry consequences far beyond today’s headlines.

The clock’s ticking on these luxury jewelry auctions.

The CIRCA Vault releases daily auctions featuring exceptional pre-owned jewelry and watches from iconic brands like Rolex and Cartier. It’s your chance to discover iconic pieces and place a bid to own them for less than you might expect.

The catch? Every auction ends in days. If a piece grabs your attention, don’t wait too long. Once it disappears from The CIRCA Vault, so does your chance to make it yours.
