Do you support the TSA’s increased use of facial recognition technology for verifying passengers’ identities?

👍 Yes (46%) – "The state already has my drivers license, while the Federal government has my passport and global entry photos, so if their using what they already have saves me time at check in, that is a benefit for me."

  • "Facial recognition is already being used in major cities on public streets and areas. Most people probably are not even aware of it. With TSA people will be most likely be advised in advance. It is a useful law enforcement tool that far outweighs the potential arguments of personal intrusiveness."

"People use facial ID on their phones everyday so if the concern is the tech not being accurate then they need to work with a tech company that can give them more accurate results. Tech is the wave of the future and anything that can make lines move smoother and faster through TSA to me is a good thing. People should have the option to opt out if they want but with AI tech, facial ID is going to happen. It’s just a matter of time."

  • "We gave up anonymous public travel long ago. We must provide the details of our identity when booking travel, and as such it is reasonable to be required to verify those details when traveling. The TSA is using existing data in the public record. This does not seem to be an invasion of privacy. Rather it seems like a really appropriate use for an aggregated database of public records."

👎 No (35%) – "Can you trust the government for anything? I fail to see how this would possibly be a benefit in the hands of such a destructive force as a republican/democrat controlled government."

  • "I just used this at the Denver airport a week ago. First, I had no idea what it was and it wasn’t explained to me so it wasn’t clear you could opt out or how it was being used which seems like a problem. Second, the line I was in that was using it was moving significantly slower than every other line so anecdotally the claim that it cuts the time in half seems WAY off."

"The problem with facial recognition is not the technology, but the retention of images and the abuse of the technology that is easy to predict. Entrance to events has been using it to prohibit event goers based on political association or employment. That has been in the courts and determined to be a violation of a person's rights. How can this not lead to that?"

  • "I don't care if it's for everyone's protection, they can use another method to verify an identity, my face is my property and AI shouldn't be able to analyze me as a science experiment. I don't think I'm really living where there is "freedom" if my face isn't even my property anymore."

🤷 Unsure/other (19%) – "If people are comfortable with doing it that way then I say go for it, but for me I’d like a way to opt out and be able to have my ID checked the traditional way."

  • "It sounds good in theory, but facial recognition has a bad history so far (can’t recognize all skin tones with the same level of accuracy) and the potential for misuse is pretty huge."
