Which of the following best describes your opinion about open primary elections and ranked-choice voting?

I support both policies (39%) – "In an environment of extremes on both sides of the aisle, anything that can be tried to bring our country back to the middle is worth pursuing. The more information that is provided to voters about the processes will only serve to improve the implementation of the policies in the long-term."

  • "Often, in order to have a voice in who will run our state, I have to register as a voter in our state's dominant party. Having to switch parties depending on the primary and the candidates is a hassle and feels disingenuous. Open primaries or ranked ballot initiatives would alleviate this need."

"As a moderate, who is purposely not registered with either of the two main parties, I would love to have the ability to make my voice heard long before election day. As it currently stands, I cannot do that unless I register with one of our two major parties."

  • "Our current voting system is designed to be divisive. Why vote if you live in a politically hard leaning area and you would vote the opposite? With ranked choice voting, each person’s vote carries more weight and the results are more likely to settle closer to the middle."

I only support open primary elections (23%) – "Open primary elections sound like a great idea. Ranked choice voting sounds like a terrible one. What happens when a person is given the most number one votes but loses because someone receives enough second place votes to beat them out? Maybe I’m not understanding the process but that doesn’t seem like democracy to me."

  • "Whether you're a Democrat or Republican I believe you should be able to vote and Open primary not necessarily for the party you support. If you feel another person is qualified from a different party you shouldn't be beholding to your party in a primary election. You should be able to choose a candidate of your choice whether it be Republican, democrat, or independent"

I only support ranked-choice voting (12%) – "It reduces finger pointing and puts the focus on what the candidate has to offer."

I support neither policy (15%) – "Too much incentive to cheat. Elections should be straightforward. One day, One vote, paper ballots. Open primaries simply invite the other side to vote against the candidate they dont like, skewing the will of the people. Ranked choice is just another cheating mechanism, as we can see by the way all ranked choice areas seem to be all Democrat."

  • "Partisans of one party should NOT be allowed to choose the other party's nominee -- it can lead to sabotage (supporting an extremist so he will lose, etc). And ranked choice is silly, since when there are more than two candidates the ordiinal preference is likely inexistent, only one candidate is preferred. The choices will be arbitrary."

Unsure/other (11%) – "I THINK I support both policies, but I don't know enough about either to say that confidently. But even if this doesn't attract wide numbers of independent/center voters, we have to start somewhere."
