What steps, if any, do you think the US government should take to address America’s gender wage gap?

"Many of the less glamorous jobs that men take, such as plumbers and electricians, pay very well. You just don't see many women in these fields. I suspect that women are choosing less labor intensive, lower paying office jobs, which are more comfortable. While men are opting for higher pay, regardless of the difficulty. I think that is we encourage more women to seek training in these high-demand, labor-intensive, well-paid jobs that we would see overall wages for women increase."

  • "This coverage of the gender wage gap is completely unrepresentative and dismissive of the issues. I am extremely disappointed in the writers of this newsletter and without a written apology/correction in the next letter, I will no longer be subscribing. This really reads as women get paid less because they choose to get paid less. There's no coverage about many of the contributing factors. There is no mention of blatant sexism. Nothing about the levels of education, e.g., women are more likely to be college educated and often need a higher degree than a man to get the same job. There is so much more to this."

"The government should not intervene as the data speaks for itself. When men and women have the same job there is no gender pay gap. It’s not apples to apples and the government has too much control as it is. And as much as there should be no discrimination in hiring it could very well lead to that."

  • "I don’t know if this problem will ever be solved for something you pointed out. In my opinion, women will always put an emphasis on raising their children and men will always put an emphasis on working more to support their families. If the gap shrinks and wages for women increase, there is more money to spend, if more money is spent, businesses do better (most of which are at this time owned by men), maybe prices increase because of this, therefore furthering the need for men to make more money. A never ending cycle."

"Permanent subsidy for child caring which will allow more to work, more employers to have workers, and teachers in the child care classrooms to make a living wage (instead of caring for our most vulnerable yet having to be on subsidy themselves because their wages are below the poverty line AND they receive not benefits...for the most part). During World War II, universal child care was subsidized by the federal government. It worked great from what I have read, but the paternal wisdom decided when the war was over to shut down the program thereby not only removing a family benefit, but also removing equal opportunity to work. So much to say on this topic!"

  • "Traditionally in the U.S. we are taught to never share the details of our compensation with anyone, certainly not our fellow workers. In truth, this benefits only the boss. If the details of everyone's compensation (including stocks and benefits) were made publically available there would be a few years when people were screaming bloody murder when they found out the boss' daughter gets paid 3x what anyone else in the company gets and doesn't ever come in to work, while the worker who does 3x as much work as anyone else gets the least amount of pay. And then eventually the higher ups would be forced to equalize compensation across the board."
