Which of the following do you think best describes China’s relationship with the United States?

Partner (10%) – "We have more in common with China and more to gain economically from dealmaking than we do with other adversaries like Russia, Iran, North Korea, etc. China's massive economy and consumer base makes it an attractive partner for US companies and gov't."

Competitor (59%) – "You can break it down by category: Basic scientific research, manufacturing efficiency, aerospace technology, military strength, computer technology, top level colleges, etc., etc. The two countries are ranked one and two in every key metric. If they were not competitors, why is there so much spying activity? No real need to spy on a partner."

  • "They beef and then they become friends when they need something from eachother. There has been tensions since China turned communist."

"Essentially empires run in cycles, and the markers that track the status show the US is on the decline and China is on the rise. They are a hungry competitor, and the US is showing signs of stagnation."

  • "Because both the United States and China are WORLD leaders and both have the most power and neither want to give up anything"

"American politicians and mass media constantly tell us that China is our enemy, but it's not because China is going to invade us or destroy us or anything like that (we're destroying ourselves well enough on our own thank you). It's because the institutions of power in America are threatened by what China represents: a well organized country with ambitions to lead a multi-polar world into a post-capitalist future. China is not communist, but it is not capitalist either, and it is willing to let capital collapse when it gets in the way of the well-being of its people (see Evergrande)--something that the US hasn't allowed in decades. Instead we are watching ourselves be hollowed out from the inside as monopolies eat monopolies and our financial sector drives us towards a cliff while our government detaches the brake pedal."

Enemy (31%) – "Pull your face out of your phone for a NY minute and go read a book. They have principles that they live by and they have written books that they use to guide their behavior. I don’t trust the Chinese communist party as far as I can throw it and neither should you."

  • "It is hard to label China an "enemy", though many of their actions are highly offensive. Their use of stealing American research and technology by covert methods is not the action of a friendly country. There are parallels to their actions and the actions of our own government. Claiming disputed island chains and waterways outside their borders creates tension among surrounding countries. This administration musing on making Canada, Cuba, and Venezuela future "states". I think of China as an overly aggressive competitor. Cautious but not very trustworthy. I believe the Chinese people, along with most people on this planet, have the same dreams and ambitions. It is our governments that deliver something different."
