Approve (5%) – "They may not have gotten to address every single issue under the sun, but lawmakers are doing a sufficient job managing everything and have us on the right track."
Disapprove (89%) – "Congress doesn’t work. I don’t mean that they are dysfunctional or that the system is broken, I mean that they literally don’t do any work. They go on TV and make statements, they hold occasional hearings (which are just more opportunities for grandstanding) but they don’t do any real work that addresses issues that people care about or that improves anyone’s life. The constant “kicking the can down the road”:is maddening. Imagine if everyone did their jobs like this."
"I get that the issues Congress is weighing are complex, but it seems like the constant shifting of deadlines is just an avoidance tactic. We're paying them to make decisions, designate funds, and sign laws. If I pushed deadlines like this at work, I'd get fired."
"I have felt this way for years. But The fact that Government shutdowns mean that every regular everyday people don't get their paychecks. While elected officials keep getting paid. The fact that the government can be shut down and everyone else has to go to work but Congress still gets their MONTH LONG RECESS. Most American citizens are not getting a whole month off. The average American gets what 2 weeks of vacation a year? And that's on the generous side. How is it that the people at the top of Government are working less days than the rest of us?"
"My biggest source of disapproval is simply that they have failed to do their job to preserve the checks and balances built into our system of government, instead ceding powers to the executive branch. All three branches are meant to be equal in power, but that seems to have been forgotten."
"Simply, Congress has not done its job. Congress was designed to be the third branch of government. This Congress intentionally has done the bidding of the President. It has not operated as the independent branch America needs."
Unsure/other (6%) – "I had a friend who said that the less that Congress did, the better it was for America. The partisan bickering seems to be so unamerican in my mind. The original manner in which the two parties would work together to create a law that neither side liked, but got closer to the intended end state used to work when our Congress-critters would compromise. Now that they are tribal and act like anything the other party proposes is antithetical to their views, nothing gets done. The downside to this is that very few things get done. The upside is that very few things get done. This makes me think that my friend was right."
