Do you support or oppose Congress’ new bipartisan housing bill?

Support (72%) – "I do give tepid support to a tepid housing bill. It won't have a great impact on housing starts, but it is a "wee" bit of action. Congress has not taken any great leaps of action in the last decade, so we have to welcome, at the very least, baby steps. I ask myself why no one takes a look at all the steps in construction and refines and simplifies said steps. Site planning, zoning, etc. Look at what Native tribes have done in Vancouver with vertical housing units. Anything can be done! Sometimes less is more, while more is less."

  • "Wage growth has fallen far short of sharply rising housing cost increases. If effect, an entire generation is being priced out of home ownership. The bill helps to lower some of those cost barriers. However, the other half of the problem - chronically low wage growth - is not addressed or even acknowledged."

"While definitely not "the perfect" legislation to come to grips with the severe housing crisis faced by many people, it is a very important start. And for the President to "hold hostage" this legislation in leverage for his fever dream of the SAVE Act is both irresponsible and malignant. And should the President veto this bill, Congress needs to override the veto ASAP."

  • "While I agree that it will not correct all current housing short comings, the main part that I do like is a program to rehab abandoned buildings and to repurpose unused office space."

"Housing has become outrageously expensive. One-bedroom efficiency apartments rent for more than my mortgage payment. A two-bedroom or more is even more expensive, so cost-sharing doesn’t necessarily make it more affordable. Then there is the increasing cost of food, insurance, and vehicles. How in the world are younger people affording these things? It’s no wonder they feel they need to enter the job market making over six figures. If they can never build equity with home ownership, they are forever at the mercy of the increasing rental market. I am fortunate that I was able to buy a home in my younger years, and now have a very affordable mortgage, and was able to move to bigger houses and properties as my family grew because I had equity. Rent never builds equity. The great American dream of home ownership is no longer affordable."

  • "It's a step in the right direction. Although, the institutional ownership limits are a genuinely bad idea. This is likely to reduce the amount of available housing."

"This is one of the main things that all voters regardless of political affiliation agree needs attention. Whether more could be done is up for debate, but this is a step in the right direction."

Oppose (13%) – "In my area specifically, we have local council members that are pushing to increase the number of homes being constructed per acre. The citizens here are against that because we have already experienced overwhelming growth that is not supported by the infrastructure. Our roads are extremely crowded, emergency services can not support the growth, and our schools are busting at the seams. The policies that have led to the increase in community growth was done without any responsibility towards infrastructure support for the people that actually live and commute here. While the Housing Act does not require our community to increase housing is encourages it and makes it easier for our local level council politicians that align their pockets with incentives to push the agenda. It is making life hard for those of us at the local level and this will make it harder."

Unsure/other (15%) – "Some measures I think will be beneficial, like the grants to turn abandoned office buildings into apartments, but others - like removing regulations on manufactured housing builds/locations and "streamlining" environmental reviews - seem that they're trading safety, quality of life, and environmental stewardship for short term gains. Which I dislike, immensely. It's a weird grab bag of mixed outcomes and while I'm leaning toward "this won't help in the long run," SOMETHING has to change, and I think it might be better than nothing."

  • "I support all of it except easing environmental restrictions. We need to protect our environment and keep green spaces. However, there are so many empty buildings that could be converted into apartments, and easing some restrictions would be beneficial."
