In your opinion, which option best describes the current state of violent crime in America?

Extremely serious problem (37%) – "Any violent crime is serious for the people involved and, therefore, for the society. Numbers beyond random events require response and protection."

  • "Irregardless of the the numbers of violent crimes, nonetheless, violent crimes remain a serious problem. The data that is not being shown is the breakdown of violent crimes by the ethnicity of both the victim and the suspect. Could it be the prospect of being targeted by ICE have a bearing on the decrease in violent crime? This will not be known until the data on the victims and suspects is released."

"Because "violent crime" such as armed robbery is tracked as a distinct category separate from "mass shootings" the lowering numbers are deceptive. Both categories involve guns and deaths and injuries. One involves greed and the other grievances. Random shootings and police shootings occur daily, routinely. The United States has recorded 282 mass shootings YTD in 2026. These incidents resulted in 273 deaths and 1,202 injuries. Literally anywhere there is a crowd, there is the potential for a mass shooting. We politically refuse to attack the systemic problems of gun control, mental health access and reducing the glorification of violence inherent in our culture and society. Do I feel safer? Do you?"

  • It's almost as if tough love works, isn't it? We finally have an administration that doesn't coddle criminals and set them free within hours. I'm sure using the National Guard didn't hurt either. I find it difficult to understand how researchers find this difficult to understand. Seems pretty clear to me. A soft touch doesn't work with murderers and rapists."

Moderately serious problem (42%) – "The most serious crime problems are almost always found in urban areas with concentration of populations with poor or disenfranchised persons. Another way to view crime is not statistical but personal. Ask the question of where you can walk in an area safely after dark? Ultimately, crime or its probability is a safety issue and therefore personal."

  • "Any violent crime is too much and while the increased law enforcement in typically violent areas has reduced numbers, we could still be doing more to deter crime."

"You've been conned if you think serious and violent crime are down. The only thing that has happened is the way crime has been categorized has changed and politicians love this...the watering down or as we say "Juking the stats" has been happening with reckless abandon over the last decade with all forms of crimes downgraded to make everything look great."

  • "You asked the wrong question. You should have asked for opinions on why violent crimes are falling. The answer is simple: technology. Criminals are realizing that in our new overwatch society, where your every move is tracked by some sort of spying technology, it has become nearly impossible to get away with these crimes. Kohberger basically got caught by Flock and private security cameras. It's not difficult to throw cell phone location data at AI and have it isolate cell phones that aren't in their "home" area, and then have the same AI grab all security camera data and locate these people, either through ALPR or facial recognition."

Not too serious problem (13%) – "In certain pockets of the country, violent crime is a pervasive problem. In the vast majority of the country, though, crime is not nearly so present as the headlines might have you think. In general, America is overall a reliably nonviolent place to live. By the numbers, anyway. If you check the news, it looks like we all live on the edge of anarchy, which, hey, I guess it drives clicks and engagement."

Not at all serious problem (8%) – "Violent crime has been at historic lows for years with a spike during the pandemic. Though the main thing I wonder is if the violent people have been shifted somewhere else. Suburbs aren't always counted, nor is violence enacted by the state."
