How do you feel about the US strategy of increasing economic pressure on Iran while scaling back military strikes?

Strong agree (31%) – "Need to see this through or all the resources expended so far are wasted. Iran hopes Trump will fold before the election and may be more amenable to real reform as the internal pressure increases."

• "This is what should have been done in the first place, instead of getting the USA involved in a war. This war has not done anything to accomplish any of the goals of the present administration to justify it, only has brought hardship on the American people and the rest of the world."

"We're in an untenable military position, or so it seems to me from open-source reporting and the strategic moves we've made. We're over committed and under supplied. We can't withdraw, because that would leave one of the world's most consequential trade routes in the hands of a regime whose actions will, by their own stated goals, lead to nuclear war. We have to figure something out, and if this is working, by all means have at it. I don't know whether it IS working - certainly the IRGC doesn't seem to be slowing down - but at this point we have few other options."

Somewhat agree (23%) – "As US military action has not achieved the alleged goals in the "excursion" with Iran, it is time for a more potent strategy. Do the same thing to Iran as this war has done to American consumers, hit 'em in the pocketbook. We can all share in the pain of a disrupted world order!"

• "I don't think we should have been bombing civilians and infrastructure to start with so I'm glad that has slowed down or stopped. Economics seems like the way this should have been dealt with originally. Although we don't want to starve the population."

Neutral (18%) – ""Neutral" because we shouldn't have started this in the first place. And now we're in pretty much a no-win position. So getting a deal done would be the real preference. Continuing to kick the can down the road in hopes of getting a "win" prolongs our own economic damage from this war. But it's preferable to throwing away more of our ordinance and more lives for ... I'm not sure what."

Somewhat disagree (12%) – "You can't negotiate with fanatical Islamic despots. The only solution is their destruction as their positions rely on status quo."

Strong disagree (16%) – "Well I strongly disagree because the war is misguided, lacks any coherent strategy, and is illegal in that the administration still hasn't received Congressional approval , now almost eight months since the start of hostilities. And while the theocracy and Islamic Republic Guards who govern Iran are repugnant it's clear that their hold on power is as firm as ever. And, most importantly, without Russia and China participating in economic sanctions can one say Iran is truly isolated? The administration keeps violating one of the fundamental rules of warfare: don't reinforce failure. This US administration reinforces its own failures in this war over and over and over again."

• "Firstly economic sanctions don't really work, look at South Africa during apartheid or Russia now, if they do work they take years not months or weeks. Secondly they impact the people not the leadership, in a democracy then maybe that can have an impact on policy, but in Iran?"
