🗣 Dose of Discussion: A 360° Look at a Hot-Button Issue | | Will prices come down anytime soon? | Image: CBC | Late last week, a gas station in Rancho Cordova, CA, was overwhelmed with customers after a glitch caused prices to drop for several hours to 69 cents per gallon… on the date 6/9 (nice).
But the humorous coincidence also shows how many Americans are eager to pounce on low gas prices, as the US average climbed above $5 per gallon over the weekend for the first time in history. (For comparison, the previous all-time record before this year was $4.11/gallon, set in July 2008.)
📈 And it’s not just gas prices… US inflation saw its fastest annual growth since 1981 in May (+8.6%), per the most recent Consumer Price Index published Friday.
- Some of the biggest month-to-month increases were seen in fuel oil (+16.9%), airfares (+12.6%), dairy products (2.9%), and used cars and trucks (+1.8%).
💬 What they’re saying: A recent JPMorgan report predicted US gas prices “could surge another 37% by August to a $6.20/gal national average.”
- Separately, top executives at JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman Sachs have warned of an economic shake-up in the coming months and years due to a series of ‘unprecedented’ factors.
👀 Looking ahead… The Fed is expected to raise interest rates by 0.5% after its next two meetings, the first of which occurs this week. Rates are currently in the range of 0.75%–1%.

⏱ Speed Rounds: Quick, Impactful Stories | | Senators agree in principle on bipartisan gun control | Image: Golden Cosmos/The New Yorker | 📝 A bipartisan group of 20 senators announced a proposed framework for new gun safety legislation yesterday.
- The agreement is “on principles, not legislative text,” per the WSJ, which also said the new measure would represent the most expansive gun control law since a 1994 assault weapons ban.
- Among other things, the proposed framework funds programs for mental health and school security, provides incentives for states to implement “red-flag” laws, and further restricts illegal gun sales such as straw purchasing.
- The bipartisan agreement included the signatures of ten Republican senators, signaling that it could ultimately reach the 60-vote threshold needed to pass in the evenly-divided Senate.
🏛️ Looking ahead... Any potential legislation would also need to be adopted by the Democratic-led House, which passed its own set of gun control measures last week (though they aren’t expected to be considered in the Senate).
- House Speaker Pelosi (D-CA) said yesterday that she would likely back any Senate-approved measure, even if it fell short of what she and other Dems are seeking.

It’s getting hot in herre | Image: Weatherbell.com | More than 75 million Americans were under some form of excessive heat warning or advisory over the weekend, as a record-setting heat wave swept across the Southwest.
☀️🥵 More deets… In total, 27 communities either tied or broke temperature records on Saturday, according to Weather Service data.
- Temps at DONUT HQ in Austin, TX, hit a record of 103°, two degrees above the previous June 11 high.
- Denver, where it snowed less than a month ago, reached 100°, tying a record set in 2013 for both the high temperature and the earliest calendar day to hit 100.
- In Phoenix, the National Weather Service reported a temperature of 114°, tying the record high for the date set back in 1918. Vegas reported temps of 109°, tying its daily record set in 1956.
🥁 And last, but not least: Death Valley, California, also tied its record high for June 11, reaching temps of 122 degrees Fahrenheit.
👀 Looking ahead… According to reports, temps will slowly moderate in the Southwest over the coming days as the heat dome makes its way toward the Midwest and Southeast (sorry, Chicago and Atlanta readers🙃).
+In the know: A team of scientists funded by the NOAA MAPP Program found the main cause of heat domes is a strong change (or gradient) in ocean temperatures from west to east in the tropical Pacific Ocean during the preceding winter.

Unlocking the secrets of the universe | Image: AP | A Japan-led international team of scientists recently published the first peer-reviewed scientific analysis of rocks taken from Ryugu, an asteroid orbiting the Sun.
🚀 Background: In December 2014, Japan launched a spacecraft that traveled nearly 2 billion miles before arriving at Ryugu in 2019, collecting a total of 5.4 grams of rock samples before turning back around.
- Upon returning to Earth in December 2020, the samples were distributed among various scientific groups, including one led by the Tokyo Institute of Technology (which authored the analysis).
☄️ What did they find?... The newly-published results suggest Ryugu is made from the same material that scientists theorize formed planets and the Sun a few billion years ago, called the solar nebula.
- The researchers also determined that Ryugu itself originated from a larger body that eventually smashed apart on impact with another asteroid.
🔬 Zoom out: A separate Japanese team in charge of chemically analyzing the Ryugu samples previously announced the discovery of more than 20 amino acids (aka the building blocks for life) at a scientific conference in March, raising the possibility that these molecules first came to Earth on comets and asteroids... so in theory, we're all aliens.😉
